Requiem for a dream (2000)

The number one reason what makes this movie so damn special is its cinematography and score. It is no doubt one of the most edgy and powerful to the context of the theme of the movie. The movie is about 4 people who are addicted to some sort of drugs and how the addiction ultimately destroys their lives all in all. The cinematography is so powerful that at one point you might feel that the addiction is in you and its growing and you want the movie to end so badly that you can just get rid of it and get back your life. I have never seeing a movie this strong that eats right in to your veins without a needle.

 

Then the acting and the plot gladly follows it. There are some very dramatic performances by the main casts and well detailed make up works that boosts the mood tenfold. Every scene that unfolds has its own style and the ability to haunt you. It is the Aronofsky style directing that is unique and stylish. This movie will put you to a deep concentration starting very slow and ending with the most mind boggling manner. Do not miss it.

Dredd (2012)

Well just as I expected this movie sucks. I just wanted to see how high up it is in the suck meter. And believe me it’s pretty high. There is no worthy plot, action, animation or acting in this. Just some too reddish body parts and eye candy high speed camera sequences.  Apart from that it reminds a bit of Raid Redemption and boy RR is so much better than this. Anyone who watched it in 3d must have loved the floating body parts and gushing blood all over the glasses. But when it comes to 2d it is not nearly a movie that I can call to be a remake of the Judge Dredd I saw long time back.

This movie is based on a strong military background but not the usual war themed. It is more of a military spy thriller that drills its routes from recruiting and training to deployment. And said to be based on true events that took place in 1960s South Korea it is a tremendous journey of heroism and courage. And for being a movie about soldiers and love for the nation its stands well above many mediocre films of that sort.

 

Silmido is structured well with good performances by most of the large cast. The only downfall is that we being unfamiliar with the names and faces of the characters at times can be a bit confusing. (They say all Asians look the same for a reason). But once that part is sorted out and the timeline and characters are set its pretty much clear to the audience. And the tough and sort of merciless training these soldiers go through are well portrayed making a solid base for the plot that unveils later. And the much unexpected twist hits the viewer on an unexpected moment. This is where the movie gets a real turn and emotional.

Bridge of Madison County (1995)

Love is the root of life and the most wonderful thing out there. It makes you outlive any hardship and gives you the courage and blesses to survive. Hollywood once was great in its romance section. Lately majority of their love stories have become dull, repeats, heartless, too complicated or too good to be true. And finally not so humanely possible and artificial like Twilight. But this movie is genuinely romantic. It is unique, very much possible and filled with warmness. The Bridges of Madison County will make you fall in love.

 

The middle aged Meryl Streep delivers a true to life very natural and simply gorgeous performance as a house wife living in a lonely farm with her family leaving all the dreams she once wanted to have. And then comes older but yet handsome Clint Eastwood a lonely photographer and a traveler looking for some article about the area. And when they meet what sparks can be cherished in heart for a lifetime living all over again to warm up the coldest of nights. This movie is utterly soul touching and cinematically peaceful and beautiful. There are long scenes of conversations and explanations. But it’s moments of silence speaks the most meaningful dialogues.

 

ප්‍රේමය යනු ජීවිතයේ පදනමය්. එය ඔබට ජීවිතය ජීවත් කිරීමටත් එහි සියලු භාදක ජය ගැනීමට ශක්තිය සහ ආශිර්වාදය ලබා දෙයි. හොලිවුඩය ප්‍රේම කතා වලට ඉතා ප්‍රසිද්ධ කාලයක් තිබිණ. නමුත් මෑත කාලීන බොහොමයක් ප්‍රේම කතා හුදෙක් බොල්, නවමු බැවින් තොර, හැඟීම්බර නැති එමෙන්ම සැබෑ ජීවිතයට යා කල නොහැකිතරම් කෘතීම ඒවා බවට පත්වීම දුක්මුසු කරුණකි. Twilight වැනි සමහර කතා කෙතරම් කෘතිමද කිව හොත් ඒවා ප්‍රේමය නමැති සුන්දර මානුෂික අත්දැකීමට විෂ එකතු කළේය. නමුත් මේ චිත්‍රපටිය ඇත්තෙන්ම ප්‍රේමනීය එමන්ම නිතර නොදකින, ජීවිතයට යහමින් යා වන උණුසුම් පෙම් කතාවකි.

 

දක්ෂ නිලි තවමත් මැදි වියේ පසුවන මෙරිල් ස්ට්‍රීප් තම පවුලත් සමග සුන්දර ගොවිපලක වෙසෙන ගෘහනියක්. ඇගේ රංගනය ඉතාමත් තාත්වික එමෙන්ම සුන්දර එකක්. මේ අතර වයසින් වැඩි නමුත් කඩවසම් ක්ලින්ට් ඉස්ට්වුඩ් තනිවූ චයාරුපශිල්පියෙකුගේ චරිතයට පන පොවමින් එම ප්‍රදේශයට පැමිණෙනවා. ඔවුන්ගේ කෙටි හමුවීමෙන් පසු ඇති වන්නා වූ හැඟීම් ජීවිත කාලයක් පුරාවට ඔවුන්ව ශීතල රාත්‍රීන් සියල්ල උණුසුම් කිරීමට තරම් ඒවා වෙයි. මේ චිත්‍රපටිය තදින් සිතට දැනෙන එමෙන්ම සිනමාකරණයේ සුන්දර එකක්. එහි දිගු කතා බස් සහිත ජවනිකා වෙයි. නමුත් වැඩියෙන්ම කතා කරන ජවනිකා වල වචනයකුදු නොවේ.

This movie feels so controversial that while one part of you will argue it’s a great movie and the other part would say it disgusting. For a fact it is one of the most unbearable movies I have seeing in recent times. And honestly I’m still arguing with myself to rate this high or low. Because while I love it for many reasons there are equal amounts of reasons I hate it.

 

The plot is simply unique. I don’t know how true to life it is and if this really takes place in South Korea but one thing I know is that it’s brutal and inhumane. And this is the very fact I hate it. Some of the things that are shown simply should not be shown in a movie art or porn whatever it is. I’m not talking about dead bodies or breaking bones here. This movie crosses some lines that should not be crossed. Period! But ultimately the plot proves that the viewer has being betrayed all along and whatever said and done has a different meaning to it. And when the final frame unfolds its strong enough to engrave an eternal impression on the viewers mind. But I will never ever watch this movie again. You dont need that pain again.

ඉතා සරල ලෙස සාරන්ෂගතකල හැකි වුවත් මෙවැනි ආන්දෝලනාත්කම කතාවක් මා චිත්‍රපටියක මෑත කාලයේ දැක නැහැ. එහි අඩංගු සමහරක් දර්ශන ඉතා සංවේදී එමෙන්ම කිසි ලෙසකින්වත් චිත්‍රපටියක් තුල පෙන්විය යුතු ඒවා යයි මාහට අවංකව එකඟ විය හැකි නොවේ. එම නිසාම මේ චිත්‍රපටිය උසස් එකක්ද නැත්නම් පහත එකක්දය් කියා වර්ගකිරීමට බොහෝ විට සිතින් වාද කිරීමට සිදුවෙය්. කතාවක් සහ ඉදිරිපත් කිරීමක් වශයෙන් එය සත්‍යය වශයෙන්ම ඉතා ප්‍රබලය. ඇස පිනවන කැමරා කෝණ හෝ සුන්දර ලලනාවන් මෙහි නැතත් සමාජ විෂමතාවය සහ ම්ලේච්චත්වය මෙතුලින් ඉතා ශක්තිමත් ලෙස ගම්‍යය වෙයි. එහි අවසන් ජවනිකාව කෙතරම් ප්‍රබලද කිවහොත් එය ප්‍රේක්ෂක මනසේ සදා කල් නොමැකෙන මතකයක් තබා වියැකී යයි. නමුත් මේ චිත්‍රපටිය කිසි ලෙසකින් හෝ මා නැවත නොබලන බව කිව යුතු වෙයි. ඒ එහි වේදනාව නැවත වරක් මා හට දැකිය නොහැකි නිසාය.

Cloud Atlas (2012)

I’m not gonna praise this. Though it is a gigantic production with simply mind blowing creativity all of that is ultimately a formula to a massive failure. The plot is enormous and it is one the most complicated and hard to connect. Maybe I’m too stupid to get it or I didn’t concentrate enough but none of those story lines is good enough to make any emotional connection with the movie. All seems the usual tales some overly dramatic, two are Sci Fi in nature, one kind of detective story, another more to comedy but all in all not a single story make sound connections with each other unless the same actors appearing in them over and over again. The movie wants us to believe that there is some kind of a connection exists between these characters something to do with afterlife and reincarnation or whatever but that point is so vaguely put. Totally bored me from the start but kept hanging on expecting something might turn it at someplace. But only thing turned was my enthusiasm to boredom.

The Help (2011)

The world is a dynamic place. Some of it is for the good and some for the bad. Treating people differently for the color of their skin is one of those bad things. Out of many movies that spark controversy about colored racism, The Help is a strong one. And it has tear jerking moments and sound cast and acting written all over it. There is no better word to explain it than ‘inspiring’.

 

Already made its place in the Oscars the year it was released this movie has got large recognition which it deserves. But the theme and the era it speaks of have endless value that cannot be just turned down. And it is the state of human mind which want to control others and ignoring the side of the controlled. The Help is about the life, feelings and voice of such set of people who are controlled that they thought that they can never be heard. Good cinematic value and touching script make The Help a movie that can be enjoyed and remembered.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

I’ll try to keep this review short as possible. There are enough and more reviews for this one on the net already. My first thought of the first scene of this was that ‘Feels like coming home’. Being a hardcore fan of LOTR trilogy it’s just pure bliss to lay eyes on the magic of Tolkien and Peter Jackson blending in together once again. And just as I expected this movie is nothing less but cinematic wizardry right from the start to end. For 3 hours it will put you in a trance (or a coma whatever you call it)  and this spectacularly detailed characters, landscapes, sets ,costumes and music starts to emerge one after another at one point you might think OMG this is too much to digest at one go. Yes it’s that much visually breathtaking.

 

And then comes the story. And it’s not that great as the visuals yet. Why I said so is that this is a trilogy. And we all know that Jackson’s trilogies have no meaning taken separately. They do once all 3 combined. So for us to go ‘OMG what a story’ we have to wait 2 more years. But still the part what’s packed in this chapter is very well made. There is equal amount of danger, humor and heroism. But sometimes it makes you wonder if some sequences are really required. (Like the battle of Stone Giants). Maybe it stretches the movie unnecessarily.  But all in all when you watch it in that jaw dropping 3d no sequences is a bad sequence. And the closing scene is so detailed and power packed that you might piss your pants thinking of what’s coming in future!!

දැනටමත් මේ චිත්‍රපටිය ඇති පදම් විචාරය වී ඇති හෙයින් මම කෙටියෙන් ලියනු කැමැත්තෙමි. ලෝඩ් ඔෆ් ද රින්ග්ස් චිත්‍රපටි පෙලේ මුල් කාලින දැඩි රසිකයෙකු වශයෙන් මා හට මුලින්ම කිව යුත්තේ මේ චිත්‍රපටිය සත්‍යය වශයෙන්ම අමුර්තයක් බවය්. නැවත වරක් ටෝල්කයින් ගේ සුන්දර කතාවක් පීටර් ජැක්සන් ගේ අධ්‍යක්ෂණයකින් දකින්නට ලැබීම භාගයක් මිස වෙනකක් නොවේ. මා අපේක්ෂා කල පරිදිම මෙය දැවැන්ත ආකර්ශනීය සිනමා විජ්ජාවක්. එහි පැය 3ක් පුරා එකිනෙකට නොදෙවෙනිව දිග හැරෙන චරිත, භූමිතල, පසුබිම්, ඇඳුම් ආයිත්තම් සහ සංගීතය නිසා ඔබ අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම මෝහනය වෙයි. විටෙක ඒ තරම් සුන්දරත්වයක් දරාගැනීමට ඔබට නොහැකි වේදෝ කියා බියක්ද ඇති වෙයි. ඔවු. මෙය එතරම්ම ලස්සන රුප රාමු එකතුවක්.

 

දැන් කතාව දෙසට හැරෙමු. රූප රාමු තරම්ම එය තාමත් සුන්දර එකක් නොවේ. මා එසේ කිවේ මේ චිත්‍රපටියේ තවත් කොටස් දෙකක් අපට ඉදිරි කාලයේදී දැකීමට ඉඩ තිබෙන නිසා. ජැක්සන්ගේ චිත්‍රපටි ත්‍රිත්වයන් වෙන් වෙන්ව ගත් කල ඒවායේ කතාවේ අරුත අඩු අතර ඒවා සියල්ල සමස්තයක් වශයෙන් ගැනීමේදී පමණි එහි නියම වටිනාකම තිබෙන්නේ. මේ නිසාම කතාව ගැන වඩා හොඳක් කියන්නට අපට අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම තවත් වසර දෙකක් බලා සිටින්නට සිදු වේවි. මේ කොටසේ ඇති තරම් හාස්‍යය, ත්‍රාසය සහ වීරත්වය ගැබ් වී තිබෙනවා. නමුත් සමහරක් ජවනිකා ඇත්තෙන්ම කතාවට අවශ්‍යයද යන්න සැක සහිතය් (ගල් යෝධයින්ගේ සටන). ඒ නිසා චිත්‍රපටියේ ධාවන කාල ඕනවට වඩා දික් වීම සිදු වෙය්. නමුත් සමස්තයක් වශයෙන් ගත් කල අධි තාත්වික ත්‍රිමාන රූපරාමු  නිසා ඕනෑම අනවශ්‍ය හටනක් කට බලියාගෙන බලා සිටින්නට පුළුවන. ඒවාගේම චිත්‍රපටියේ අවසාන රුප රාමුව කෙතරම් ප්‍රබල සහ සවිස්තරාත්මකද කිවහොත් මීළඟ චිත්‍රපටි වලදී දකින්නට ලැබෙන දේවල් ගැන සිතන විට සමහර විට ඔබේ කලිසම තෙමෙන්නටත් බැරි නැහැ.

To start with this one is not the usual sweet animation. It is eerie, scary and bit yucky. So it’s different. Seldom have we seen animations of this sort. There is lot of screaming, falling body parts and floating ghosts. But don’t get too alarmed. It’s not that gory. When it comes to plot it’s not the greatest one ever made but its good enough to keep the movie going. There are enough humor and bunch of cool characters that fits in well (including dead people). Overall it cannot compete much with the big animations out there. But production and direction wise is it something to see. The stop motion animation is simply superb. Maybe the best ever made (Or maybe I have not seeing the best so far).

මෙය නිතර දැක පුරුදු සුන්දර තේමාවක් රැගත් සජීවිකරණ චිත්‍රපටියක් නම් නොවෙය්. එය බියකරු, ත්‍රාසය පිරි එමෙන්ම තරමක් හිරිකිත එකක්. එහි ඇති තරම් මර ලතෝනි, කඩා හැලෙන ශරීර කොටස් සහ පාවෙන හොල්මන් තිබෙය්. නමුත් බිය නොවන්න. ඒවා හුදෙක් විනෝදජනක ඒවා මිසක බිහිසුණු ඒවා නොවේ. මේ කතාව අතිශය වෙනස් එකක් නොවුනත් චිත්‍රපටිය සමබරව ගෙන යාමට එය සමත්. මෙහි රසවත් චරිත ගොඩක් සහ හාස්‍යය අන්තර්ගතය් (හොල්මන් ඇතුළුව). සමස්තයක් වශයෙන් ගත් කල නිතර දකින සජීවිකරණ චිත්‍රපටි වලට අභියෝගයක් වීමට නොහැකි බව පෙනුනත් මෙහි සජීවිකරණ උත්සාහයනම් ඉතා හොඳයි. එමෙන්ම නිෂ්පාදන අගයද හොඳ බව කිව යුතුය්.

 

කතාව ගෙතෙන්නෙ මළවුන් සමග සුහද කතා බහේ දීමට සහජ හැකියාවක් ඇති කුඩා දරුවෙක් තම නගරයට ඇතිවන ප්‍රේත උවදුරක් දුරු කරලීමට උත්සාහ කරන ආකාරයයි. නගරයේ සියල්ලෝම මේ දරුවා දෙස දක්වන්නේ දැඩි අකමැත්තක් වුවත් අවසානයේදී ඔවුනට ඔහුගේ පිහිට අත්‍යාවශ්‍යය වනවා.

Extracted (2012)

Not all movie scripts get a big studio to produce it. And not all movies get a big budget. And not all low budget movies look good. But Extracted is an out of the ordinary small time movie which is quite good for its budget and production. It’s a science fiction that may not sound entirely original but very interesting. Going in to someone else mind and reading their thoughts all sounds a little too familiar. But this one has a twist that worth the wait. Few minutes in to the movie you feel like it looks like TV material. But once you get passed that it will get you hooked. Just little under one and half hours it’s a perfect short watch to stimulate your scientific brain.

2046 (2004) (Hong Kong/China/Mandarine)

2046 is an artistically mesmerizing, cinematographically dramatic piece of modern movie running on multiple timelines but not contemporary.  It’s subtle and thought stimulating but a puzzle of its own genre that some of us may not call as totally fulfilling. There is an open ending leads nowhere but in to an abyss of emotions and character. It’s very slow phased and segmented. There are few chapters of the same story but some not really is in a particular order. But somewhere down the line we get to connect the dots but more dots seems to appear in the horizon.

 

Maybe Chow is one of the most complicated and self centered man I saw in a recent movie. He is a drifter for some extent but a cold hearted writer who doesn’t bother to care about the people who fall for his charm. And when it comes to Su Li-Zhen and Bai Lang are they used or are they actually borrowed we tend to wonder. But still in this monotonous, congested city of Hong Kong everyone seems to be taking advantage over the other. And in those glimmering colorful lights and glasses full of wine there are many secrets hidden.

 

2046 connects a science fiction novel written by Chow and his inspirations to come up with its story. The presentation is so well made that the bond between him, the sci fi novel and the character he create seems to be so real. And there is a huge void in his heart that the viewer feels along with the tears and the pain of the people he connects with. He doesn’t let go of his subtle smile or the mustache no matter how twisted situations he faces. Maybe it’s his identity.  Live like nothing can touch him after all the pain he confronted in the past that makes him a drifter and a writer.

 

I will be watching this over and over again in years to come... And every time I’d see something new.

If you do not have the simplest of interest about the movie industry and the technical aspects which makes it so special you will not find anything in this. But if you’re the kind who believe that movies are a form of magic that makes the human kind significant as artistic beings then this is for you. And it mainly concentrates on one aspect of movie making. That’s the medium of its preliminary form of capturing images. The conversation is built upon the traditional yet still prominent film medium and the new and improving digital medium and post process of both. There are many well known names in the industry participate by giving their opinions and sharing experience of working with both mediums. Names such as George Lucas, Martin Scoresese, James Cameron, Steven Soderbergh and many other directors, cinematographers, editors etc. It creates a balance between the old and the new while controversially discuss the destructions the industry currently face due to the popularization of the digital mediums and equipment that eats in to the creativity which ones stood to be the most important element.
