Chronicle (2012)

Drama | Sci Fi | Thriller

People with superpowers are not rare on screen nowadays. Earlier flicks like Super 8 and I’m Number Four was very good at making realistic super heroes. And the latest addition to such dramatic and natural superhero flicks is Chronicle.  It has a wonderful flow to it that the viewer will not expect what’s coming next as the story unfolds. It starts as a story surrounding an innocent and overrun teenager and his obsession with his newly bought yet old video camera quickly develops in to unknown territory of super powers. And when the climax hits the screen it feels like it’s the mother of all superhero actions sequences. Not so glorious but truly felt by the heart and mind. You will not regret seeing this.

3.5/5

Sin Nombre (2009) (Mexico)

 Adventure | Crime | Drama

Bullets don’t know the good side or the bad side but humans must know how to choose. When they don’t and their judgment is clouded by anger, ego and greed they fall in to an eternal abyss of darkness. Serious movies about gangsters are always disturbing yet very powerful. They make you wonder if that world really exists and how lives of underworld really prevail in such stability. While we get to see the beautiful side of the planet and life they live a low life with no future to claim for exactly. This tale is about few people who wished that they changed the system. But while some make it out some taste the bitterness of the lives they ones stood for.

Cargo (2009) (Switzerland-German)

Mystery | Sri Fi | Thriller

Somewhat bringing the memories of early sci fi’s like Sunshine and Moon, Cargo has a tale to tell of its own uniqueness. The whole flick has an eerie emptiness and a mystery that keep the viewer glued to the plot and overall feeling of it. This good plot met with fantastic CG makes a perfect sci fi movie that rarely seeing these days. The set creation is wonderful; flow is great and etc etc. Maybe a little downside is the vision of non evolved simple future technology like torches or welding machines at year 2270. The rest is all mind blowing.

3.5/5

Kahaani (2012) (Hindi)

Drama | Thriller

I do not watch lots of Indian flicks now as I have lost faith in them sometime back. They have started to become mundane and just flashy along with pointless and empty hand in hand. But Kahaani is different. It has a powerful plot, eye pleasing cinematography and performance. Only thing it lack is ‘songs’. But once you’re done with this you might wonder why you really need songs in movies anyway! The story twists in many corners but the last 10 mts makes every guess you made worthwhile or either useless. And then it ends with a touch of pain, love and hope. Good cinema!

3.5/5

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

Action | Adventure | Crime

While most sequences fail, here comes a rare gem featuring the famous Sherlock Holmes ones again. Teamed up with his adventure thirsty side kick Watson he set out across Europe to stop a war from happening. This flick has enormous yet well detailed sets and costumes. Some of them are wonder to see. And then it has the most mind blowing or I must say ‘bloody awesome’ action sequences that will pop your eyes out of the socket. Have no doubt this is a real treat.

3.5/5

Synopsis: Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty.

Underworld: Awakening (2012)

Action | Fantasy | Horror

I’m a loyal fan of Underworld series. It has a very interesting plot and does not ‘abuse’ the real nature of the vampires or werewolves. The whole series is action packed and dark in its own identity. Yet for few reasons I’m a bit disappointed about this one, the Awakening. One the plot is mundane. It doesn’t manage to pull of something extraordinary and just makes few twists here and there in order to fill the gaps. And then it’s too short and too rushed. Finally the characters don’t make much sense. Even the action sequences are not that thrilling. Maybe we are getting used to the Underworld and it needs to reboot seriously.

3/5

Synopsis: When human forces discover the existence of the Vampire and Lycan clans, a war to eradicate both species commences. The vampire warriors Selene leads the battle against humankind.

Switch (2011) (French)

Action | Crime | Thriller

Switch has everything to make is a very good thriller. Fantastic and unfamiliar plot with even interesting twists here and there it’s a non stop watch. For a moment the viewer will get lost somewhere and doubt the plot if it’s actually playing tricks, and it does. When you hit the ground back again there is no one to stop you. French got action people. And this is a good example.

3.5/5

Synopsis: An unemployed fashion designer from Montreal switches apartments with a woman in France. And when she goes to France a surprise waits for her and she is on the run of her life.

Haywire (2011)

Action | Thriller

Simply put this is Jason Bourne’s bra wearing version. Solid hand to hand combats + a plot that doesn’t give up till the last 10 minutes, this is a must watch for action & thriller lovers.  Only things this flick missing is a good scary car chase and some explosions. Sound cast even in minor roles.

3.5/5

Synopsis: A black ops super soldier seeks payback after she is betrayed and set up during a mission

A Lonely Place to Die (2011)

 Adventure | Crime | Thriller

Starts as an adventure games movie with wilderness and adrenaline this flick turns its feathers upside down as it proceeds. I’m actually impressed from the way the script flow from calm to chaos without even making a sweat. This one has an amazing score with breathtaking landscape sceneries to calm you down at the start. But as it progress you will start to wonder is this the usual survival and courage movie or is it going to turn in to a horror. Or will it become a thriller and ends with a massacre. But you will not really guess where it goes until a certain point approaches. Even from there it doesn’t stop to impress you.

3.5/5

Act of Valor (2012)

Action | Adventure | Thriller

I have seeing a considerable amount of war and combat movies. Some overcooked and some makes me say ‘meh’. But this one is just a super hyper adrenaline ride that makes you feel every step the soldiers take. If you’re looking for high tech but not some ‘Impossible Mission’ unrealistic stuff, this is the place you will find it. Some of the tech these guys use is awe impressing. And if you seek first person shooter action like Call of Duty or Ghost Recon, you got that too here baby! And the action sequences are top notch mind blowing and you will feel each bullet hits around you. This flick has entertained me and at the same time made me honor the brave soldiers out there. Salute them so that we can sleep in peace at home. In this there is no strong plot, no critical acting nor characters. But there is bravery and precision written all over it. Go watch it!

3.5/5

Mr. Nobody (2009)

Drama | Fantasy | Romance

If you thought Inception was mind boggling, wait till you see this. This is a fantasy drama which is so unique and twists your mind you might want to watch it over and over again just to catch up the scenes only. Filled with wonderful scenes of artistic cinematography, high speed camera work and slow motion and backward sequences it runs in several times lines without giving priority to anyone in particular. It’s like some magic or a spell that makes you wonder if you’re watching this movie for real or insanely that if you really exist after all! For each of us who watch it will have very different ways to explain it I’m sure because the internet is filled with different explanations at a glimpse. But the only thing matters is that the choices we make in life takes us in to different paths overall but each of us is connected or effects each other in ways unimaginable. We need more movies like this.

4/5

Synopsis: In the year 2092, one hundred eighteen year old Nemo is recounting his life story to a reporter. He is less than clear; often times thinking that he is only thirty-four years of age. But his story becomes more confusing after he does focus on the fact of his current real age. He tells of his life at three primary points in his life.

Like Crazy (2011)

Drama | Romance

If you were truly in love even for a once in your life time, you will fall in love with this movie. It’s just plainly simple and the name says it all. Love is madness and it will make you crazy. And it will make you say and do the craziest of things, keep you up at night and give you tears. You will think you can forget it but it just haunts you in every corner you visit. The life you knew becomes a mirage without it and the life you want to have is not a possibility without it. That’s the message of this flick. Fall in love and never let go. Beautiful acting combined with heartwarming cinematography and what not.

3.5/5

Resistance (2011)

Drama | Thriller

The atmosphere which this movie creates is lonesome. Though there is a war raging through the world, the valley this story takes place is forever calm and beautiful. The plot is quite interesting. But I feel like it was not achieved its full potential. Maybe it’s the art direction or the flow overall. It has less impact or feeling to be precise. There are one or two moments where we feel the story with pain and despair but it soon fades in to oblivion. I honestly don’t mind the painfully slow progress but I do mind the emptiness.

3/5

Synopsis: In 1944 a group of women in an isolated Welsh village wake up to discover all of the their husbands have mysteriously vanished.

Tomboy (2011) (French)

Drama

This is a subtle drama about the joys of the childhood and a complicated girl who wish to be treated as a boy. Funny and curious as it sounds the story spreads its wings to uncover the strong desires which this little girl has towards her ambitions. Completed with very natural performances and almost non existing score it has a beauty of its own. Almost the entire movie takes place in the view of children and the final bit transform it in to adults and gives us the viewer an opportunity to see the problem in both angles. A good watch.

3.5/5

Synopsis: A 10-year-old girl, settling into her new neighborhood outside Paris, is mistaken for a boy and has to live up to this new identity since it's too late for the mistake to be clarified.

The Sunset Limited (2011)

Drama

This movie is not at all expensive or even looks like a movie to start with. But it’s rich with ideas and perceptions. You might feel like you’re at the drama theater and watching some stage drama. Just one set of an apartment in the New York ghetto and two actors going on and on about their views of life. One is a god fearing ex convict and the other a suicidal professor who has very different views of life and faith.  After some time you may engulf in their thoughts and life just like two people you have known for a long time. Maybe if the god and the devil had a peaceful conversation over a coffee and a home meal this would be it.

3.5/5

Synopsis: Two men in an apartment with their opposing beliefs.

We Bought a Zoo (2011)

Comedy | Drama | Family

I don’t remember being happy after watching a movie in recent times (or ever) like I felt after watching this one. This is simply brilliant and makes you feel like a dream come true. It’s beautiful, full of hope and more than anything touches your soul like no other movie can. The cast is wonderful and so do the characters they portray. Each one of us would like to experience something beautiful like this in our lives but maybe we don’t because we are not so courageous to take a risk. As it says ‘it takes only 20 second of courage to change your life’. And life is full of obstacles but the real joy is when you take each as an adventure. All I can say is WOW.

Synopsis: Set in Southern California, a father moves his young family to the countryside to renovate and re-open a struggling zoo.

Ice Age 4 - Continental Drift (2012) posters

Contraband (2012)

Who cares about the plot holes or the coincidences when the plot is this interesting and keeps you at the edge of your seat? Another enjoyable and out of the ordinary heist movie that will last in the heist movie books history. Go make some illegal cash!

Deep Blue Sea (2011)

Drama | Romance

The story telling is interesting. It swings in between few times lines until finally at one point hitting the present day for good. Cinematography and acting is also commendable. Little slow phased but that builds the mood and the atmosphere for the rather disappointing or sad ending. Story wise not really the twister or the extraordinary, but quite rich in emotions.

3.5/5

Synopsis: The wife of a British Judge is caught in a self-destructive love affair with a Royal Air Force pilot.

Shame (2011)

Drama

There is neither easy way to show what this flick is all about nor an easy way to write about it. Simply put the dilemma of a man who is a sex addict and the failure attempts of him realizing his weakness and trying to become normal is what this is all about. Like I said before there is no easy way to show it than showing how strong the urges he faces and the way he sees the world around him. At times this is deep and emotional and at times it’s entirely an artistic porn movie. The skin show has very little boundaries which some of you might find uncomfortable. But it provides a passage right inside to the horrors he faces in his life and diversion from real priorities to ones which are led by desire. Very strong acting by Michael Fassbender and beautiful cinematography overall.

4/5

Synopsis: In New York City, Brandon's carefully cultivated private life -- which allows him to indulge his sexual addiction -- is disrupted when his sister Sissy arrives unannounced for an indefinite stay.
