Lootera (2013) Hindi, Rating 4/5

Vastly Indian cinema is known for vibrant display of fascination and romantic melancholy mixed with colors and tunes. And most of them just leave you with short memories and empty mind. But Lootera has vastly broken that code and stands out to be a bittersweet movie experience. And a vastly memorable one. This movie from start to end runs with a great deal of silence embedded. Which means it’s mostly filled with expressions and dramatic and artistic visuals. For this very reason it just sinks right in to your heart. The songs are subtle yet beautifully placed. The mood it creates with the settings taking place in the mid 50s and the details in the cinematography along with makeup and costumes etc is quite a beauty to witness. And finally keeping all the visuals away the story which flows smoothly like silk takes the number one spot in what’s good about Lootera. It’s genuine, twisting and most strikingly heartwarming. If you take the two halves of the movie they are completely different from each other and still equally effective. Definitely an Indian melodrama that does exactly what’s it meant to do. Feed your mind.

Souls Of Sand (2010) (India/Hindi)

It is perfect to say that this movie has one of the best yet subtle transformations of genres. It starts as a very slow yet curious filled mellow drama. The mood created by the characters and atmosphere is not similar to any other. It is a complete satisfaction from the start as it is. And then it slowly change its color to red from yellow. The plot gradually turns dark and suspenseful. But still it does not loose its artistic dramatic touch. Each scene is well planned and each frame is photographic. The ending some might say to be too perfect and predictable. But it’s not the only way that things could have ended. There are other possibilities as well. Yet this story is woven beautifully from start to end and bring about few of the best characters as well.

But the most mind boggling part is that this plot is partially similar to many masala type Indian movie plots we have seeing for decades. But still you don’t realize it until you sit back and think over the events of the whole movie. Isn't that a brilliant thing?

මේ චිත්‍රපටිය ඉතාමත් සාර්ථක ලෙස දිවෙන අතරතුරේදී කතාවේ ප්‍රභේදය වෙනස් වන එකක් බව කිවොත් නිවැරදි. මෙයට මන්දගාමී නාට්‍යමය හුරුවක් සහිතව කුතුහලය දනවන ආරම්භය ඇත. විස්තර නොකළ චරිත සහ පසුබිම් වාතාවරණය තුලින් එය යම් කිසි අව්‍යාජ මනෝභාවයක් මවයි. මුල පටන්ම සිනමා තෘප්තියෙන් යුතු කතාව යම් ස්ථානයකදී මන්දගාමී කහ පැහැයෙන් රුදුරු රතු පැහැයට හැරෙයි. ඉන් පසු එය අඳුරු කතා තේමාවකට වඩාත් සමීප වන්නේය. නමුත් එය චිත්‍රපටිය මුල සිටි ඇති සුන්දර නාට්‍යමය කලාත්මක ගතිය එලෙසම පවත්වා ගනියි. සියලු රුප රාමු මනාව අමුණන ලද ඒවා වන අතර සැබෑ චායාරුපමය ගතියක් උසුලයි. කතාවේ අවසානය ඔබ සමහරක් විට ව්‍යාජ සහ කලින් කිව හැකි එකක් ලෙස අර්ථ දක්වනු හැකියි. නමුත් මෙය අවසානය සිදු වීමේ එක සම්භාවිතාවක් පමණි. කෙසේවෙතත් මේ චිත්‍රපටිය මුල සිට අගට ඉතා සුන්දරව ගෙතුණු තිරය මත දක්නට හැකි ඉස්තරම් චරිත කිහිපයක්ද ගෙන එන එකක්.

 

නමුත් සිත සලිත කරවන කරුණ නම් මෙහි කතාව ඔබ මෙතෙක් ඇති පදම් දැක ඇති හින්දි චිත්‍රපටි වල පට්ට ගැසුණු කතා වලට බොහෝ සෙයින් හුරුවක් දැක්වීමයි. නමුත් ඔබට ඒ බව වැටහෙන්නේ චිත්‍රපටිය අවසාන වී එහි සිදුවීම් ගැන මනාව විශ්ලේෂණය කිරීමෙන් පසුවයි. එයම අරුමයක් නොවේද ?

Harud (2010) (India/Hindi)

Harud is a drama that takes the viewer in to the harsh life of people living in Kashmir somewhere in Indu Pakistan border. The director lets the viewer to follow the main lead who hardly speaks anything. For better half of the movie the viewer is let to imagine most of the stuff about him and even at the end there are some questions unanswered  But the main focus of the movie is to show the different life in an area where military has control and the lifes of people who live in fear day in and day out. Though the life seems normal they don’t even have the privilege to use mobile phones which is one key highlight of the movie. And most of the things happen in the movie are distant from each other and has little relativity on surface but strongly connected to the thematic plot that runs under. However I personally find the ending to be kind of unexpected and abandon the viewer.

 

හරුඩ් යනු ඉන්දු පකිස්තාන් සීමාවේ කාශ්මීරයේ යම් ස්ථානයක ජනතාවගේ ජීවිතය අලලා ගෙතුණු නාට්‍යමය චිත්‍රපටියක්. අධ්‍යක්ෂවරයා කතාව ගොතන්නේ බොහෝ විට නිශ්ශබ්ද ප්‍රධාන චරිතයක් මුල් කොට ගෙනයි. ඔහුගේ චරිතය තරමක් ගුප්ත එකක් වන අතර චිත්‍රපටියේ අවසානයේදී පවා යම් දේවල් ප්‍රශ්නාර්ථයක් ලෙසින්ම පවතී. නමුත් චිත්‍රපටියේ මුලික අරමුණ වන්නේ එම ප්‍රදේශයේ ජීවත් වන මිනිසුන් හමුදා පාලනය නිසා විඳින දුක් ගැහැට සහ ඔවුන්ගේ ජීවිත වල ඇති අරුත්සුන් බව විදහා පෑමයි. සමහරක් විට මෙහි ජීවිතය සාමාන්‍යය ලෙස පෙනුනද ඔවුනට ජංගම දුරකථන භාවිතයට පවා අවසර නොමැතිකම කතාවේ ප්‍රධාන සංකේතයකි. කතාවේ සිදුවන දේවල් මතුපිටින් එතරම් එකිනෙකට සම්බන්ධයක් නැති ඒවා වුවද ඇතුලතින් ඒවායේ තද බැඳීමක් තිබේ. කෙසේවෙතත් කතාව අවසානයේදී සිදුවන අනපේක්ෂිත සිදුවීමක් නිසා ප්‍රේක්ෂකයාව මුලාවුවක් සේ හැඟීමක් මාහට දැනේ.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) (India/Hindi)

SRK and Yash Chopra seems always a winning combination. And this would be the final of that formula in working which the world would ever see. And just as it was before this also has its moments of glory. Knowing the plots that bollywood comes up with and its style of storytelling this indeed is no big of a surprise. But it is well presented with breath taking cinematography, emotional filled acting and fantastic set of songs.

 

Speaking of the plot one might simply throw it aside blaming it to be lame or too coincidence driven. But knowing bollywood there has being many unspeaking worthy plots than this. And if you take it serious and think along the basic lines it has a certain depth that can actually make you wonder.  What can love do to you and what daring things that love can make you do would be two of those. I simply enjoyed it for its bollywood beauty and the fantastic wide angle cinematography. And for it being a truly romantic movie as it has always supposed to be.

 

ශාරුක් ඛාන් සහ යාෂ් චොප්රා යනු සැම විටකම පාහේ ජයග්‍රාහි මුසුවක්. මේ ඒ මුසුවේ අප විසින් අත් දැකිය හැකි අවසාන චිත්‍රපටියයි. මින් පෙර චිත්‍රපටි මෙන්ම මෙහිද මෙනෙහි කලයුතු තරම් වුනු අගනා අවස්තාවනි ඇත. බොලිවුඩ් සිනමාවට ආවේනික කතා සහ කතා කීමේ රටාවන් ගත් කල මෙහි අමුතුවෙන් පුදුම විය යුතු දෙයක් නොමැත. නමුත් එය සිත මන්මත් කරවන සිනමාකරණය, ලයාන්විත රංගනය සහ වින්දනීය සංගීතය යන අංග තුනෙන්ම පොහොසත්.

 

මෙහි කතාව ගැන විමසීමේදී සමහරෙක් එය බොළඳ සහ හුදෙක් අහඹු සිදුවීම් මත පදනම්ව දිවෙන එකක් ලෙස පවසා බැහැර කල හැකියි. නමුත් සැබවින්ම මෙයට වඩා බොළඳ කතා ඉන්දීය සිනමාවටනම් අරුමයක් නොවේ. නමුත් මදක් ගැඹුරින් විමසීමේදී එම කතාව තුල ගත යුතු දෑ සහ දිගින් දිගට සිතීමට දේවල් ඇත්තේය. ආදරය විසින් යමෙකුට කල හැකි දේ සහ ආදරය විසින් යමෙකු ලවා කෙරෙවිය හැකි දේ ඉන් දෙකක්. මා විසින් මේ චිත්රපටිය එහි බොලිවුඩ් සිනමාවේ සුන්දරත්වය සහ මනරම් පුළුල් තිර සිනමාකරණය නිසා බෙහෙවින් රස විඳින ලදී. එමෙන්ම එය බලාපොරොත්තු වූවාක් සේම ඉතාමත්ම ප්‍රේමනීය එකකි.

Honestly I do not know if there is good acting or even good cinematography in this. Actors seem to be rather artificial or very different and cinematography is something like made by an amateur using a camera phone. But what are gripping about this movie are its mood and the story. In a way you can interpret the acting and cinematography to be one of the most natural ones. And there is a very mild script that doesn’t have much to say. But most of it is presented with action and silence. And believe me this is not a fairy tale about love blossoming amongst too people in the dream land of Kashmir. I trust it is life and hardship mix with expectation made extra sweet with a drop of love.

 

අවන්කවම මේ චිත්‍රපටියේ හොඳ රඟපෑමක් හෝ සිනමාකරණයක් ඇතිදැයි කීමට මම නොදනිමි. එහි නළු නිලියන් ඉතා කෘතීම හෝ වෙනස් වන අතර කැමරාකරණය නුපුහුණු අයෙක් විසින් ජංගම දුරකතනයකින් කරන ලද්දක් සේ දැනේ. නමුත් මෙහි බැඳීම ඇතිවන්නේ එහි කතාව සහ චිත්‍රපටිය විසින් ගොඩනගන මනෝ භාවය විසින්. සමහරක් විට මෙහි ඇති අමු රංගනය සහ සිනමාකරණය අධි තාත්වික එකක් ලෙස හැඳින්වීමටත් හැකියාවක් ඇත. එමන්ම අඩු දෙබස් පරිශීලනයක් සහිතව වැඩිපුරම රංගනය තුලින් සහ නිහඬ බව තුලින් මෙහි කතාව දිග හැරෙනවා. මා විශ්වාස කරන්න මෙය කාශ්මීරයේ සිහින පසු තල මත බිහිවුණු පෙම් කතාවක් නම් නොවේ. මා සිතන්නේ මෙය ආදරය නමැති පැණි බින්දුවක් දමා රසවත් කල ජීවිතය, එහි කටුකබව සහ බලාපොරොත්තුව නමැති කතාව බවයි.

Don’t think you can call this a children's movie right away. It does have a wonderful theme with a very talented child actor in it but there is lot that fits any age of audience. And it’s based on a very memorable childhood experience which I’m sure many have their own stories to tell. That’s flying kites. Though the movie is a little bit heavier than kites themselves at some points, most of the time it will take the viewer high up in the sky with lot of joy and happiness. And the feeling of being lifted from the ground and forgetting all the harsh reality that exist down there is a good one. This is not the typical long movie from Bollywood. It’s short and it’s definitely sweet.

 

මෙය එක හෙලාම කුඩා දරුවන් සඳහාවූ චිත්‍රපටියක් කියා කීමට නොහැකි. එය රසවත් කතාවක් සහ ඉතා දක්ෂ ළමා රංගනයක් සහිත ඕනෑම වයසක අයෙකුට රසවිඳිය හැකි එකක්. ඒ වගේම මෙහි කතාවත් බොහෝ දෙනෙකුට තම සුන්දර ළමා කාලය මතක් කරදීමට සමත් දෙයක් වටායි ගෙතෙන්නෙ. එනම් සරුංගල් යැවීම. සමහර තැන් වල චිත්‍රපටිය සරුංගල් වලට වටා ගොඩක් බර බවක් දැනුනත්, බොහෝ තැන් වලදී එය සරුංගලයක් වගේ සැහැල්ලුවෙන් ප්‍රේක්ෂකයාව ඉතා ඉහලට ගෙන යනවා. මහා පොළොවේ ඇති අසුන්දර දේවල් මොහොතකට හෝ අමතක කර සරුන්ගලයත් සමග අහසට එසවෙන මොහොතේ ඇතිවන හැඟීම නම් ඉතින් බොහොම සුන්දර එකක්. මෙය ඉන්දියාවේ අප නිතර දකින ඕනවට වඩා දිග චිත්‍රපටියක් නොවේ. එය ඉතා කෙටි වගේම ඉතා ලස්සනයි.

Let me piss off some of you to start with. Who ever thought this is Oscar material please wake up your hallucinating. If this is that then Black is out of this planet! True Barfi is a very good entertainer. It’s beautiful in every aspect. It’s filled with Lovely cinematography that some scenes are purely photographic art. And on top of everything Ranbhir and Priyanka does mind blowing fantastic performances. From the moment I watched Rockstar he climbed many steps on my bollywood actor’s scale and this time also he proves that he is nothing but talent. Maybe the new age plastic heroes with six packs should seriously learn from this guy.

What I may not prefer is that it’s a bit of a drag. Usually Hindi movies are drag but this you feel it. The story change phase often and the plot change its mood and preferences frequently which actually put the viewer in a tight spot. There are moments where you cannot actually figure out where it’s headed. Apart from that as mentioned before it’s amazingly beautiful and thoroughly enjoyable. There are more than few scenes which are so emotional in a totally bollywood style. But seriously India you will not get anywhere in Oscars if you don’t realize the amazing movies you produce other than masala. Why not try MTV awards with this?

මේ වසරේ ඉන්දීය සිනමාව දුටු වඩාත් කතා බහට සහ ප්‍රසංසාවට ලක් වුනු Barfi නම් වන මේ චිත්‍රපටිය ඇත්තෙන්ම එතරම් උසස් ගනයේ චිත්රපටියක්ද යන්න දෙවරක් සිතිය යුතු කරුණකි. ලොව විශාලතම සහ වටිනාම ඔස්කාර් සම්මානය සඳහා ඉන්දියාවෙන් මෙවර නිර්දේශ වන චිත්‍රපටි අතරට මෙයද එක් වෙයි. නමුත් සත්‍ය වශයෙන්ම චිත්‍රපටියක් ලෙස ගත කල මෙහි මින් පෙර නුදුටු අරුම පුදුමයන් නොමැත.  රන්බීර් කපුර් සහ ප්‍රියංකා චොප්රා ගේ අති විශිෂ්ට රංගන දායකත්වය සහ ජවනිකාවෙන් ජවනිකාවට සුන්දර රූප රාමු හැරුණු කොට මෙහි ඉතුරි වන වෙනත් අද්විතීය යමක් නොමැත. එම නිසාම වෙනත් ඉන්දියාවේ නිෂ්පාදිත අගනා සිනමා කෘති වලට නොලැබෙන අගය කිරීමක් මේ චිත්‍රපටියට ලැබෙන්නේ කෙසේද යනු ගැටලුවකි.

පුරා පෑ දෙකහ මාරකට සමීප ධාවන කාලය මේ සඳහා මදක් වැඩි බවය් මගේ හැඟීම. කතාවේ ඇති නිතර වෙනස් වන සුළු ගතිය සහ කතාවේ අරමුණු හරි හැටි ස්ථානගත නොවීම ප්‍රේක්ෂකයා විටෙක අපහසුවට පත් කරන බව හැඟෙ. ඒ හැරුණු කොට සුපුරුදු ඉන්දීය සිනමාවට හුරු සුන්දරත්වය මේ චිත්‍රපටිය පුරාවටම සිත්තම් වී තිබෙනවා. බොහෝ අවස්ථාවල එය ප්‍රේක්ෂකයාව සිනහවෙන් කුල්මත් කිරීමට සමත් මෙන්ම තවත් මොහොතක ඇසට කඳුලක් එක් කරනවා.

The first impression you get from English Vinglish is that Sri Devi has not lost her glory after this many years off the screen and this is a ever better and improved version of her. Her facial expressions are simply fabulous and her eyes just speak not only English and Hindi but almost all the languages you can every think of. This movie is profoundly successful thanks to her and I for a fact cannot simply think of another who can pull this off this perfect. As a movie this is far less glamorous than the usual bollywood flick. It has no huge dance crews, upbeat songs or breathtaking visuals. But it has the most important element. That is a story. A story that actually applies to the south Asian audience than anywhere else and it is dramatic and heartfelt. A thoroughly enjoyable movie from India after sometime yet still intact with a touch of masala.

මේ සිනමා සිත්තම නරඹන ඔබට මුලින්ම සිතට ඇති වන හැඟීම වන්නේ ශ්‍රී දෙවි නම් නිළිය කෙතරම් කලක් රිදී තිරයෙන් සැඟවී සිටියද අයගේ සුන්දරත්වයේ සහ රංගනයේ කිසිදි අඩුවක් සිදු වී නොමැති බවය්. ඇත්තෙන්ම මෙය ඇගේ වෙනස් නමුත් ඇත්තෙන්ම වැඩි දියුණු කල රංගන හැකියාවක් වෙය්. ශ්‍රී දේවිගේ ඒ සුන්දර රංගනය නිසාම මේ චිත්‍රපටිය මුල සිට අග තෙක් අලංකාර වන අතර එහි ගැබ් වුනු ලස්සන කතාන්තරය එමගින් තව තවත් ලස්සන වන බව කිව යුතුය. ඉංග්‍රීසි බස හැසිරුවිමට නොදන්නා කම නිසා ඉමහත් සිත් තැවුලට සහ නොයෙක් පීඩා වලට ලක්වන සාම්ප්‍රදායික ඉන්දීය බිරිඳකගේ චරිතය ශ්‍රී දෙවි විසින් ඇති විශිෂ්ට අන්දමින් නිරුපනය කරනවා. ඇයගේ මුහුණේ ඇති හැඟීම් නම් ලොව කිසිම බසකට කියා නිම කල නොහැකි තරම් තාත්වික සහ ප්‍රබල එවය්. එමෙන්ම චිත්‍රපටියක් වශයෙන් ගත කල බොහෝ හින්දි චිත්‍රපටි වලට වඩා සරල සුන්දර බවකින් හෙබිය්. නමුත් එය මේ චිත්‍රපටියේ සාර්ථකත්වය කිසි ලෙසකින් හානි කොට නැහැ. දකුණු ආසියාවේ අපට තදින් සිතට දැනෙන ජවනිකා රැසකින් මෙය පෝෂණය වනවා.

Just as I expected the second and the last installment of the Gangs of Wasseypur is strong, powerful and brutal than the first one and it simply break shattering grounds of Indian cinema. The vengeance pass down father to son and after 3 generations it continues to boils iron and there is no end to it. This is nothing but brilliant film making by Anurag Kashyap. It could simply be one of the best gangster and mob movie made not only in India but in the world cinema. It’s raw, suspenseful and mind bogglingly realistic. And this starts right from where the first movie left the story and the killing spree becomes a marathon with many in line up. Great cinematography with long single camera sequences which is executed with brilliant accuracy and performance. This factor makes the viewer to experience some of the most intense scenes without interruption and the imagination to boil further and further.  I don’t recall such raw acting in any of the recent movies even from Hollywood. Each of these characters are so dominant in their role sometimes it’s hard to get your eyes off even from a small time character. This is nothing but a luminous piece of cinema screaming the society of bitter truth.

නුතන ඉන්දීය සිනමාව තුල බිහි වූ විශිෂ්ට කෘතියක් බවට තහවුරු වූ  Gangs of Wasseypur චිත්‍රපටියෙහි දෙවැනි සහ අවසාන කොටසය් මෙය. එය මා බලාපොරොත්තු වූවාක් සේම පළමු චිත්‍රපටියට වඩා සාර්ථක, දරුණු සහ ප්‍රබල එකක්. පරම්පරාවෙන් පරම්පරාවට වයිරය පොදී බැඳගෙන හැදෙන වැඩෙන සමාජයේ කටුක සහ දුර්ගන්ධ පැති  කඩක් මේ චිත්‍රපටියෙහි මුලික තේමාව වනවා. මුල් චිත්‍රපටිය අහවර වූ  තැනින්ම ආරම්භ වන මේ දෙවැන්න ඒ කතාවේ නව මන් සොයමින් ඉතා ප්‍රබල ලෙස සීග්‍රයෙන් ඉදිරියට ඇදෙනවා. විශිෂ්ට රංගන කුසලතාවයන් බොහෝ ගණනක් මෙහි එන නොයෙක් චරිත ගොන්නට පන පොවන අතර ඒ රංගනයන් බොහොම තාත්වික එමෙන්ම සාමාන්‍ය ඉන්දියානු සිනමාවේ දකින්නට නොලැබෙන තරම් ඒවා. ඒ හා සමග මුසු වූ කුසලතා පුර්ණ කැමරා අධ්‍යක්ෂණය කතාවේ ප්‍රබලත්වය දෙගුණ කිරීමට බොහෝ සෙයින් රුකුල් දෙන බවට ඔබට ඉක්මනටම වැටහේවි. සමහර දිගු එමෙන්ම තනි කැමරා රාමුවකින් හෙබි ජවනිකා ඇත්තෙන්ම කිහිප වරක් නැරඹිය හැකි තරම් සුක්ෂම ඒවා. අපරාධ කල්ලි සහ පාතාලය ගැන කියවෙන ඉන්දියාවේ පමණක් නොව ලෝක සිනමාවේ මෙතෙක් නිෂ්පාදනය වුනු  හොඳම ගනයේ චිත්‍රපටි ගොන්නට මෙය ඇතුලත් වේවි.

Kites feel like the average dose of Indian cinema but in deep its actually not. It has powerful performance by the handsome and talented Hrithik and gracefully breathtaking smile of Barbara Mori. When these two combined it produce one highly flammable formula that puts the whole movie in fire.

And you cannot help yourself but to get burned. Apart from one or two stupid stunts in the name of hot pursuits, the rest of the movie is actually well crafted. A special note has to be made about the fantastic cinematography of Kites.  When it unfolds every scene has a poem and a story of its own and it’s that much fascinating. Could be one reason I was glued to it staring at every camera frame trying to grab the best out of it before it fades away. Some may feel like the ending it too harsh but every love story doesn’t have a fairytale ending. Two thumbs up for being different.

Kites සුපුරුදු හින්දි සිනමාවෙන් මදක් ඔබ්බට ගිය චිත්‍රපටියක්. හ්රිතික් රෝෂන්ගේ දක්ෂ රංගනයත් බාබරා මොරිගේ හද කිතිකවන සුන්දර සිනහවත් අතර ප්‍රේක්ෂකයා අතරමන් කිරීමට එය සමත්. ඔවුන් දෙපල කෙතරම් හොඳින් මුසු වෙනවාද කිවහොත් කතාවේ උණුසුම කිහිප ගුණයකින් තීව්ර කරන්නට ඔවුනට ගත වන්නේ සුළු මොහොතක් පමනය්. නොකියා බැරි තරම් සුන්දර රුප රාමු එකක් පසු පස එකක් දිග හැරෙද්දී සමරවිට මට උන් හිටි තැන්ද අමතක වුවාද යන්න සැකය. සුන්දර කතාවක් සහ අති සුන්දර ඉදිරිපත් කිරීමක් Kites තුල තිබෙනවා. කතාවට නොගැලපෙන ත්‍රාසය පිරි අවස්ථා එකක් දෙකක් හැරුණු කොට බහුතරයක් වෙලාවට කතාවේ ගලා යාම හොඳ මට්ටමක පවතිනවා. සමහරක් දර්ශන තරමට වඩා දිගස්සෙන ගතියක්ද චිත්‍රපටිය අවසාන භාගයේදී දකින්නට පුළුවන්. ඒ කෙසේ වෙතත් සමස්තයක් වශයෙන් ගත් කල Kites ඉතාම ලයාන්විත එමෙන්ම හදවතට සමීප ඛේදනීය පෙම් පුවතක්.

This movie is not for the short minded or weak hearted. It’s long like a dark coal mine and brutal like deep cut on a hot sunny day. Its story telling is fast phased. And it doesn’t give the viewer a second chance to catch up. Most of the time the story flaws vigorously until it finds some soft spot to relax for few minutes before the next hurdle. For people like us who thank the subtitle god for making things clearer, the phase puts a challenge. The plot is just a usual formula of anger and revenge. But it’s told in a unique perspective combining generations of anger in one mix which is one reason how the story is long to start with. And it has some similar characteristics with western mob movies in cinematography and music. But overall its hardcore bollywood style and culture that’s make it more effectively violent. Good and natural performances that combines rage, romance and lust makes this flick a strong experience. Maybe told in Godfather style there is another chapter which I would eagerly wait to see.

 

බටහිර පාතාල චිත්‍රපටවල සුළු සුළු ගැලපීම් තිබුනත් මෙය එවැනි චිත්‍රපටියකට කිසි සේත්ම සමාන වන්නේ නැති හොඳින් ගෙතුණු ඉන්දීය චිත්‍රපටියක්. ඉන්දියානු සංස්කෘතිය සහ ඒ මිනිසුන්ගේ ප්‍රේමය, වෛරය සහ බලලෝභී නිර්ලජ්ජිත ක්‍රියා පටිපාටින් උඩින් දිවෙන මේ කතාව දිගු එමෙන්ම සාහසික සහ ප්‍රචණ්ඩ දර්ශන ගොන්නකින් යුක්තය්. ඒ නිසාම බොහොම සියුම් සිතැති අයට මෙය සුදුසු නැති බව කිව යුතුමය්. නිතර දකින අවැඩ සහ පලිගැනීම ගැන කියවෙන කතාවක් උවද එය වෙනස් අයුරකින් නිර්මානාත්මක ඉදිරිපත් කෙරෙන අතර ඒ කතා පුවත වසර 60කට අධික කාලයක් පුරාවට දිවෙනවා. එමෙන්ම මේ රඟපෑම් ඉතාමත්ම බලවත් සහ තාත්වික ස්වරුපයක් ගැනීමද මෙහි හොඳ අංගයක්. කතාව බොහොමයක් විට ඉතා වේගවත් අයුරින් ඉදිරියට ගලායාම නිසා ප්‍රේක්ෂකයා යම් කිසි අපහසුතාවයකට පත්වන අවස්ථාද තිබෙනවා. නමුත් සමස්තයක් ලෙස ගත් කල ඉන්දීය වාණිජ සිනමාව තුල නිතර නොදකින වර්ගයේ වටිනාකම් බොහොමයකින් මේ චිත්‍රපටිය පිරි තිබෙනවා. මේ කතාව අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම තවත් කොටසකට මුල්ගල් තබමින් නතරවනවා.

Starts like a witty teenage comedy but gradually changing face to a strong heartfelt drama, Udaan is no ordinary movie from Bollywood. It must be the clear voice of many teenagers out there who comes from abusive families with dreams of their own which seems like impossible to achieve. While many keep silent in front of their guardian’s brutalities and rigid behavior, some may fly free the very moment they can. This story is of such teenager who once thought that the world is all about poetry and imagination on paper, but soon realizes that dreams of becoming a writer is no reality in front of his over controlled abusive father. Rather than looking up to him all Rathod would ever want to do is look away from his father and find his life elsewhere than the place he calls home. With a very touching story line and wonderful acting Udaan is a masterpiece of its own kind. Strongly built upon a young mischievous of age yet innocent boy and a strong autocratic egotistic father this formulae is no failure. Loved every minute of it.

 

මේ චිත්‍රපටිය අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම තාරුණ්‍යයේ රසයෙන් මුසපත් වුනු නමුත් ජීවිතයේ සුන්දර බව තම දුෂිත දෙමව්පියන්ගේ වරදින් අහිමිකරගත් බොහොමයක් දරුවන්ගේ පීඩිත හඬයි. විටෙක රසවත් විහිළු තහළු වලින්ද තවත් විටෙක හද කම්පාකරවන සංවේදී අවස්ථා ගොන්නක්ද සමගින් දිග හැරෙන මේ චිත්‍රපටිය නිතර ඇසෙන දකින බොලිවුඩ් පැණි රස කතාවක්නම් නොවේ. එහි තුල ගැබ් වී ඇති ඇත්ත කොතරම් තිත්ත උවත් මෙහි තරුණ කතානායක රතෝඩ් සමග ඔහුගේ දුක්බර සහ කටුක ජීවිත අත්දැකීම් බෙදාගැනීමට හැකිනම් කියා ඔබට සිතේවි. ඔහුගේ උදවුවට කිසිවෙක් නැතිවිට ඔහුට උදවු කිරීමට ඔබට නොහැකි නිසා ඔබට සියුම් දුකක් දැනේවි. නමුත් ජීවිතය කාව්‍යයක් මෙන් සුන්දරව දකින මේ අහිංසක දඟකාරයා කෙසේ හෝ තම විමුක්තිය සොයා කරන කැප කිරීම් බලා ඔබට සතුටක්ද දැනේවි. “උදාන්” බෙහෙවින්ම සිතට දැනෙන සාර්ථක සිනමා කෘතියක්. එහි සැම මොහොතක්ම ඔබව තවත් අලුත් මිනිසෙක් බවට පත් කරය්.

This movie doesn’t carry anything extraordinary. But it speaks several truths in-depth through the diverse set of characters in it. These people don’t know each other or they were meant to be known but like all of us in the society we have our own story. Chaurahen is a set of ideas that might be contradictory or fit to the viewer’s comprehension but could be applicable in general. And this is not a big budget masterpiece. It’s just something that you will see life in it without boasting about it. Highly recommended for the drama lovers, while the rest might leave after fifteen minutes.

 

මේ චිත්‍රපටිය ජීවිතය සහ අත්දැකීම් ගැන සුළුවෙන් සහ ගැඹුරින් කෙරෙන කතිකාවතක්. අතිශය නාට්‍යමය ස්වරූපයකින් යුතු මෙය බොහෝ දෙනෙකුට ප්‍රිය නොවීමට තරම් වේගවත් හෝ කුතුහලයෙන් බර නොවිය හැකි. නමුත් මේ අරුත් බර කතා කිහිපයක් සහ ලස්සන පිටපත්.
