New World (2013)

No matter what kind of an impression you had earlier regarding Asian action and gangster movies, New World will open your eyes to some thing so heart pounding that when it ends you will be hungry for more. With well-executed bloody action sequences and top of the line performances and with a  twisted  plot this movie just pulls you off the chair more than once.

Though some of Hollywood experts will call this a rip off of the great gangster flicks like the Godfather or Departed I solemnly disagree to that statement as for the fact that though this carries certain similarities it is brilliant and unique in mostly Asian way.

New World is a long movie that runs over 2 hours but it does not waste a minute. It has this elegance that the Asian crime movies commonly has with gangsters in dozens wearing clean suits and pitch-black and dustless cars that rolls on blood money. With that beauty of cinematography with panning and high angle shots New World creates a dramatically enjoyable crime thriller. And the music is so good it just swiftly blends in to the scenes and gives the viewer goose bumps.

The plot is not that complicated yet will take a while to make sense. It is twisty beware but some might be able to foresee the ending from far. But there is no solid assurance that thing will go as planned so viewer will stick to the end. Even at the end it gives some answer and leave the viewer with more questions perhaps. And all this thanks to the brilliant acting and direction.

Like I said at the start no matter what opinion you have around New World there is no doubt it is one of the finest of gangster crime movies you saw in a while.

Samaritan Girl (2004) (original title Samaria)

This movie is filled with characters which make you ponder on their behaviors more than you actually agree on them. School girls who involved in prostitution to earn some cash to attain a dream they want, elderly men who goes out with them just to find a fantasy they never got to live, father who blames the world for his daughters mischief’s  are the main people you will discover here. At times the drama is subtle but sometimes it’s more than you can simply digest. Maybe out of Kim Ki-Duk movies this is the one I don’t really agree much about the script and the presentation. Being overly dramatic could be the main reason for it. Apart from being that it has the subtle beauty which all of his movies carry. It’s mysterious, interesting, suspenseful and above all that unique and very different. Fans of Korean cinema and the director specially should not miss it.

This probably is one of the most silent movies that speaks beyond imaginable words. And it is another mind boggling piece of artistic cinema coming with Ki-Duk Kim’s visionary directing. The grip that this movie has on the viewer from start to end is quite powerful. And just like every Ki-Duk Kim movie it leaves with questions than answers.

 

The plot in 3-Iron is is one of the most unique once that I have witnessed. It is kind of tragic yet blissfully out of this world in a way. The 2 main charactors in the movie has nothing to say to each other but somewhere deep within has the strongest bond. They are mischievous but have great respect to each other and the gratitude towards their lifestyle. And the whole movie is bound with determination and soul searching that ultimately pays off. But as viewers we are left to decide the meaning of the things we witness. "It's hard to tell that the world we live in is either a reality or a dream." The script says.

 

සමහරක් විට මෙය ඉතාමත්ම නිශ්ශබ්ද චිත්‍රපටි වලින් වඩාත්ම වැරෙන් කතාකරන එකක් විය හැකි. එමෙන්ම එය  කොරියානු ජාතික මහා සිනමාකරු කි ඩුක් කිම් විසින් අධ්‍යක්ෂණය කෙරුණු තවත් මනස කළඹන සුළු සිනමා කෘතියක්. මෙය මුල සිට අගටම ශක්තිමත් ලෙස ප්‍රේක්ෂකයා ග්‍රහණය කර ගනියි. එසේම බොහොමයක්ම කි ඩුක් කිම් චිත්‍රපටි මෙන්ම මෙයත් අවසානයේදී උත්තර වලට වටා ප්‍රශ්න රැසක් ඉතුරු කරමිනුයි නිමාවට පත් වන්නේ.

 

මෙහි එන කතාව මා විසින් අත් දකින ලද ඉතාමත්ම අසමසම එකකි. ජීවත්වීමට හරි හමන් තැනක් නොමැති තරුණයෙක් අනුන්ගේ ගෙවල් වලට හොරෙන් ඇතුළුවී එහි කල් ගත කරණ අතර එක නිවසකදී ඔහුට හමුවන තරුණියක් සහ ඔහු අතර යම් කිසි බැඳීමක් ඇති වෙයි. මේ බැඳීම නිසා ඔහුගේ පුරුදු දුරු වෙනවා වෙනුවට ඔහු තවත් එයටම ඇබ්බැහි වෙයි.  

 

මේ කතාව එක අතෙකින් ඛේදාන්තයක් වන අතර තවත් අතෙකින් බෙහෙවින් සුන්දර එකකි. මෙහි එන ප්‍රධාන නළු දෙපලහට ඔවුනොවුන්ටන කීමට කිසිම දෙයක් නැති වුවත් ඔවුන්ගේ අභ්‍යන්තරයේ ඇති ගැලපීම සහ බැඳීම අතිශය ප්‍රබලය. ඔවුන් බොහෝ විට සල්ලාල ජීවිතයකට කැමති බවක් පෙනුනද ඔවුනට ජීවිතය සම්බන්ධව දැඩි දයාවක් සහ ගවුරවයක් ඇති බවක් පෙනේ. එමෙන්ම මේ මුළු කතාවම අදිෂ්ටානය සහ ආත්ම ගවේෂණය හා බැඳෙන එකකි. නමුත් ප්‍රේක්ෂකයින් ලෙස අපට මෙහි සිදුවන දේවල් පිලිබඳ ස්ව නිගනමයකට ඒමට සිදු වෙයි. පිටපත කියන පරිදි “ මෙලොව සිදු වන දේවල් සැබෑවකද නැත්නම් සිහිනයක්ද කියා කීමට අපහසු වෙයි”

This movie is based on a strong military background but not the usual war themed. It is more of a military spy thriller that drills its routes from recruiting and training to deployment. And said to be based on true events that took place in 1960s South Korea it is a tremendous journey of heroism and courage. And for being a movie about soldiers and love for the nation its stands well above many mediocre films of that sort.

 

Silmido is structured well with good performances by most of the large cast. The only downfall is that we being unfamiliar with the names and faces of the characters at times can be a bit confusing. (They say all Asians look the same for a reason). But once that part is sorted out and the timeline and characters are set its pretty much clear to the audience. And the tough and sort of merciless training these soldiers go through are well portrayed making a solid base for the plot that unveils later. And the much unexpected twist hits the viewer on an unexpected moment. This is where the movie gets a real turn and emotional.

This movie feels so controversial that while one part of you will argue it’s a great movie and the other part would say it disgusting. For a fact it is one of the most unbearable movies I have seeing in recent times. And honestly I’m still arguing with myself to rate this high or low. Because while I love it for many reasons there are equal amounts of reasons I hate it.

 

The plot is simply unique. I don’t know how true to life it is and if this really takes place in South Korea but one thing I know is that it’s brutal and inhumane. And this is the very fact I hate it. Some of the things that are shown simply should not be shown in a movie art or porn whatever it is. I’m not talking about dead bodies or breaking bones here. This movie crosses some lines that should not be crossed. Period! But ultimately the plot proves that the viewer has being betrayed all along and whatever said and done has a different meaning to it. And when the final frame unfolds its strong enough to engrave an eternal impression on the viewers mind. But I will never ever watch this movie again. You dont need that pain again.

 

දකුණු කොරියාවේ කර්මාන්ත පුරවරයක මුදල් ගිනි පොලියට දීමේ ජාවාරමකි. මෙසේ මුදල් ගන්නේ ජීවිතයෙන් බැට කන අසරණ කර්මාන්තකරුවෝය. ඔවුන් මුදල් නැවත ගෙවීමට අපොහොසත් වුනු විට ඒවා අය කර ගැනීමේ කුරිරු අමානුෂික මෙහෙවරක යෙදෙන සිත් පිත් නැති මිනිසෙකි. ඔහුගේ ක්‍රියාකාරකම් කෙතරම් කෘර වුවද ඔහුට සුළු හෝ පසු තැවීමක් ඇති බවක් නොපෙනේ. නමුත් මේ සියල්ල වෙනස් වන්නේ වසර 30 කට පසු ඔහු මෙතෙක් නොදැන සිටි තම මව හදිසියේ හමු වීමෙන් පසුවය්.

 

ඉතා සරල ලෙස සාරන්ෂගතකල හැකි වුවත් මෙවැනි ආන්දෝලනාත්කම කතාවක් මා චිත්‍රපටියක මෑත කාලයේ දැක නැහැ. එහි අඩංගු සමහරක් දර්ශන ඉතා සංවේදී එමෙන්ම කිසි ලෙසකින්වත් චිත්‍රපටියක් තුල පෙන්විය යුතු ඒවා යයි මාහට අවංකව එකඟ විය හැකි නොවේ. එම නිසාම මේ චිත්‍රපටිය උසස් එකක්ද නැත්නම් පහත එකක්දය් කියා වර්ගකිරීමට බොහෝ විට සිතින් වාද කිරීමට සිදුවෙය්. කතාවක් සහ ඉදිරිපත් කිරීමක් වශයෙන් එය සත්‍යය වශයෙන්ම ඉතා ප්‍රබලය. ඇස පිනවන කැමරා කෝණ හෝ සුන්දර ලලනාවන් මෙහි නැතත් සමාජ විෂමතාවය සහ ම්ලේච්චත්වය මෙතුලින් ඉතා ශක්තිමත් ලෙස ගම්‍යය වෙයි. එහි අවසන් ජවනිකාව කෙතරම් ප්‍රබලද කිවහොත් එය ප්‍රේක්ෂක මනසේ සදා කල් නොමැකෙන මතකයක් තබා වියැකී යයි. නමුත් මේ චිත්‍රපටිය කිසි ලෙසකින් හෝ මා නැවත නොබලන බව කිව යුතු වෙයි. ඒ එහි වේදනාව නැවත වරක් මා හට දැකිය නොහැකි නිසාය.

I like to keep my reviews short as possible. The world is a busy place and you may not have the time to read a ton of details. But honestly when I write short on this movie I will be doing the greatest injustice to it. So as the Buddha says don’t take my word for it. See for yourself.

This is a mind soothing piece of cinema which heavily based upon eastern Buddhism. For some it may not be applicable as a religion or a philosophy but as humans this will apply to everyone none the less. It is the story of maturing creatively expressed through the journey of a monk who lives in a small shrine in the mid of a lake. The story evolve through seasons and each season has something very different yet thoroughly deep to offer. The viewer has the sole freedom to determine and justify or reject the events this has. The movie will not push you to any corner or try to justify anything. It just gives you an opinion and that may not always be agreeable by the viewer. But largely what this cinematic masterpiece has to offer is far ahead of just being spiritual. And the sheer beautify and inner piece is not just created by the story but by mesmerizing cinematography and beauty of nature.

 I myself may not have understood it to its fullest and will be pondering for many days to come. And with each moment I will realize something new and that much closer to the life story this movie unfolds.

ලොව බොහෝ කාර්යබහුල තැනක් නිසාවෙන් මම මගේ චිත්‍රපටි විචාර ඉතාම සරල සහ කෙටි ඉදිරිපත් කිරීම් ලෙස දැක්වීමට කැමැත්තෙමි. නමුත් මේ චිත්‍රපටියට මා කරන ලොකුම අසාධාරණය එයම වන්නේය. මෙහි ගැඹුර වචන කිහිපයකින් කීම කිසි සෙත් නුසුදුසු බව හැඟෙ. එනිසාම බුදුරදුන් වදාළ සේම මාගේ වචනය මා කියූ පමණින් පිලි නොගෙන ඔබම සිතින් සිතා පිළිගන්න. එසේ කිරීමට ඔබ මේ චිත්‍රපටිය බැලිය යුතුම වන්නේය.

මෙය මනස සනසන බුදු දහම සහ ගැඹුරින් බැඳුනු සිනමා කෘතියකි. බොහෝ දෙනෙකුට ආගමක් හෝ දර්ශනයක් වශයෙන් මෙය නොදැනුනද ජීවිතය හා බැඳී යතාර්ථයක් ලෙසින් එය සියල්ලන්ටම පොදුය. ජීවිතයේ පරිනතවිම ඉතාමත්ම නිර්මාණශීලි අයුරින් මෙහි කතිකා කෙරෙන්නේ විලක් මැද පිහිටි පාවෙන පන්සලක වැඩ වසන පැවිද්දෙකුගේ ජීවිතය ඇසුරෙන්. එය ගලාගෙන යන්නේ පරිච්චේද පහකින් යුතුවය්. ඒවා එකිනෙක බොහෝ වෙනස් කම් දරන අතර ඇතුලතින් ඉතා ගැඹුරු මෙන්ම සමානද වෙයි. චිත්‍රපටිය ඔබට කිසිම දෙයක් ගැන මත විවරණයක් බලෙන් ලබා නොදෙන අතර එය තේරුම් ගැනීම සහ තීරණය කිරීම ඔබටම භාර වන්නේය. මෙහි කතා වස්තුව හුදෙක් ආගමික කතාවකට සීමා නොවූ විශිෂ්ට එකක් බව කිව යුතුමය. එහි ලස්සන තව තවත් වැඩි වන්නේ පරිසරයේ ඇති අලංකාර එයට එක කොට ඇති අයුරිනි.

මා මේ චිත්‍රපටිය මුළුමුනින්ම තේරුම් ගත්තෙයය් කීමට හැකියාවක් මට නැත. නමුත් බොහෝ කලක් මා මේ අගනා සිනමා කෘතිය ගැන මෙනෙහි කරන බව මා දනී. ඒ සියලු මොහොතකදීම මා විසින් අලුත් යමක් ජීවිතය ගැන සොයා ගනු ඇත.

There are absolutely no two words that this movie is one of the most epic visual experiences you can have up to date from an animation. It’s not just animation but a hybrid of CG and 3d modeling mixed to make a stunning eye pleaser from start to the very end. And the brilliant score becomes one with the visual and puts the viewer in to mesmerizing trance. The soundtrack is just awe perfect and grips the viewer by the depths of the ear canal. Yet the same cannot be told about the story. It has being tested before and has a bit of vast unexplored and unexplained territories. But with the sheer magic unfolding with the stunning visuals and the music the plot seems to be tagging along just fine. Animation and Sci Fi lovers will dig this! And this is going in to my personal favorites collection.

Sky Blue මොහොතක් මොහොතක් පාසා ඔබ මවිත කිරීමට තරම් සුන්දර ජවනිකා දහස් ගණනකින් හෙබි, ඔබට දැකීමට ලැබෙන විද්‍යා ප්‍රබන්ධ සජීවීකරණ චිත්‍රපටි අතර විශිෂ්ටතම ස්ථානයක මතකයේ රැඳෙන එකක් වනු ඇත. කන්කළු සහ අසන්නාගේ මනසේ ගැඹුරු ස්ථානයන් පවා ස්පර්ශ කිරිමත සමත් පසු බිම් සන්ගීතයන්ගෙන්ද මේ චිත්‍රපටිය පිරි තිබෙනවා. එලෙස මන බඳිනා දර්ශන සහ ඒ හා උරෙන් උර මිත්‍ර වුනු සංගීතයද එක්වූ කල මේ දෙස විමතියෙන් බලා සිටීම හැරෙන්නට වෙනත් කිසිවක් කිරීමට ඔබට අමතක වන්නටද පුළුවන්. කෙසේ වෙතත් චිත්‍රපටියේ කතා වස්තුව ගැන එසේ වර්ණනාවන් කිරිමට අපහසුය්. මින් පෙර අත් විඳ පුරුදු තේමාවකි එහි ඇත්තේ. නමුත් මේ සියල්ල එක් කොට ගත් කල Sky Blue සජීවිකරණ චිත්‍රපටි ප්‍රිය කරන ඔබට දිව්‍යමය ආහාරයක්.
