Let’s be Cops (2014): Ratings – Genre 3/5, Overall 2/5

This common above averagely funny comedy movie is definitely uncommon when it comes to the theme it has chosen. Two 30 year old men who has got nowhere with life accidently realizes that impersonating as cops can gain them the recognition they so desperately required in their life. Though how crazy and fat fetched this idea sound the movie pulls off some crazy stunts keeping aside some obvious plot holes side. But as it is a comedy and all we want is to laugh no idea is a bad idea.

Let’s be Cops is not boring. It starts a little slower than most comedy movies but gradually develop to be crazy funny sometimes. But most of the time it remains normal other than some occasional lines which can make you laugh a bit more than the rest. The reason why I kept going was because I was curious to know where the story will lead and how well the movie can pull off the predictable scenes. And I found them to be quite entertaining but not exceptional.

Regarding the performances they are ok but none of them can really spark the humor as such. Maybe I was expecting 21 Jump Street out of this but the chemistry between those two does not exist here. Maybe it’s a weakness of the script too. But as a comedy for light minded viewing let’s be Cops is not bad at all.

Expendables 3 (2014) : Ratings – Genre 2.5/5, Overall 1.5/5

It would be bold and ok to say that after two consecutively engaging and improving sequels, Expendables has screwed up bad this time. This movie looks like it’s out of place and going nowhere and a huge potential of acting, bullets and explosives are flat out wasted.

The tattooed bad ass underground private soldier gang Expendables is back and they are facing a known enemy from the past. Barney (Stallone) decides to recruit young blood for the last battle saying adios to his old gang and it turns out to be a bad idea. Facing Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson) is trickier and tougher than it seems and Expendables patience and talents tested to the brim.

So why exactly this movie did went wrong? It is definitely not the cast and not the action because both of them have more than enough vibe to pull off some awesome movie. I think where it fails is the poor story line which has many connectivity issues and weak flow compared to the previous movies. It feels like some cast is not given a fair chance to perform and their presence is just a mere hallucination of the fact that Expendables is has many old school heroes in one place. This was common in pervious movies as well but the plot and direction was smooth enough for the fans to positively accept it. The only refreshing addition that worth witnessing is Mel Gibson where he brings in some true spark to the dull story line.

Talking of the good Expendables 3 is a high octane action jump start right from the beginning. The action is almost 90% farfetched but we all know the drill here. So there is nothing I can complain about it. Action sequences, cast and set creations are good. The whole movie sees no lush greens or hope of a blue planet but takes place entirely in dull, harsh environments except for the night club and city scenes. There are enough destructions and explosions corner to corner and some really good witty one liners. And Arnold finally wants everyone to GET TO THE CHOPPAH!

A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014) – Ratings : Genre 3.5/5 Overall 2/5

Hay the American West was bad and we know it. But I never knew it was this hilariously bad. This movie picks up some obvious facts from the 18’s USA and sums it up to be a predictable yet a very funny comedy. With cocky dirty humor without limits and sarcasm written all over it the people who can digest this will certainly like it.

Albert (Seth MacFarlane) who is a cowardly sheep farmer and a man with a big broken heart after his girlfriend dumped him decides that it’s finally time to leave the pathetic small town he was living in the West. But soon he is touched by the mysterious Anna (Charlize Theron) who happens to arrive in the town. But he is yet to realize that Anna is full of surprises and most of them will get him killed.

A Millions Ways to Die in the West is a very straight forward comedy and I take it to be positive. Comedies should be light weighted and should have little surprises. All the fans want is to have a good time watching it and get back to their not so hilarious lives in a jiffy. This movie does its job well though it may not be crowned as the best comedy ever produced. Scene after scene it throws in some really hilarious lines and some of them are so funny that you might lose the next few lines while laughing.

Acting wise there is plenty to laugh about and definitely Theron proves that she is a stunner even in vintage clothing and natural looking makeup. There are quite a few surprising appearances of guest casts who are well known who are capable of raising a brow. All in all this movie packs some real funny goodies and some of them might taste like horse shit. But it’s okay!!

Need for Speed (2014) Ratings: Genre 3/4 | Overall 2/5

As there is a common belief that soccer is the universal sport of planet earth if you ask a gamer what is the universal game they would most probably say Need for Speed or NFS.  It’s nearly impossible to find serious gamer who have not played even a single edition of NFS. And for the love of the game the long awaited Need for Speed movie is here and from a gamers perspective it’s everything they can ask for. But from a movie fans perspective there are critical downsides to it. So before you watch this think to which category you belong to. I as a person who played NFS from the very beginning when the game was supported on DOS and had nothing much to offer than pixelated moving objects have no reason to dislike the movie.
The plot is very straight forward. When street racer Tobi Marshall (Aaron Paul) is betrayed and sent to prison he has no other ambition than proving himself right. Once released he find a fast ride and get in to the legendary undercover street race to beat his rival.

For anyone who liked Need for Speed there are definitely two reasons, the nearly fantasy collection of super cars and the long races. That’s right. Need for Speed has some cars that blow your speed brains out. For motor heads its porn and the movie follow its games lead and pump in some really expensive rides. The awesome collection includes 2013 Shelby GT500, Saleen S7, Lamborghini Sesto Elemento, McLaren P1, GTA Spano, Bugatti Veyron Super Sport and Koenigsegg Agera. I’m quite certain that it’s the most expensive car line up in a movie so far ‘if’ they were the real deal. But then again for movies like this with so many of them get crashed at the end the real cars with real specs are out of limits. Apart from the cars the races are quite well done. However as the bar is already set up very high by the all-time king of street race movies Fast and Furious, Need for Speed is lacking some innovation there. But still the races are very entertaining and full of destruction.

Why Need for Speed fails to make a mark as a movie is for obvious reasons. To start with the plot is very lose and utterly impractical. You can say the same about Fast and Furious too but F&F had some charm in the cast (Heavily with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker) that made the fans forgive the movies crappy plot holes. But NFS is lacking that charm and it doesn’t look good. Aaron Paul is a good actor made his way up the ladder with the awesome TV show Breaking Bad but it seems like this role is not something that completely fits him. He is a character actor than an action star and maybe the fans expect more of him than some cheesy lines and pretending to drive inside a car in a studio. So the cast and plot both are not working in favor of the movie and that’s a big letdown.

It’s still too early to predict if Need for Speed will become a big and a good movie franchise in the future if they make a sequel. But at the moment it drags behind few spots on the top street car race movies of all time.

Sabotage (2014) Ratings: Genre 3/5 | Overall 2/5

It seems like after the comeback of Arnold he is not making any positive headlines. The Last Stand (2013) and Escape Plan (2013) both have being quite dull. And his this year’s supposedly block buster Sabotage is also not making big waves. True that action movies are not for Oscars. But when it comes to Arnold it was used to make some sense. Sabotage is an action + slasher movie hybrid. But the problem is it doesn’t do neither right. There are certain things that make you watch it till the predictable end. But once you’re done you will quickly move over. Yet for serial action movie lovers there are plenty of things to enjoy. But Arnold is not one of them.

The movie is based on a gang of hardcore DEA agents who pulls out a lethal raid on a drug cartel safe house and volt. And after attempting to steal 10 million dollars from it the whole gang goes out of commission and gets investigated by the high up. But after many months the investigation gets cleared and they get reinstated to find out that their team is one by one getting murdered by someone.

While the action part of it is done quite good the whole ridiculous plot and twists makes Sabotage a disaster. There are twists in side twists and when the whole show reveals itself there is not enough juice to fire up the big engine. Maybe if this was straight forward like those good old 80’s action flicks it could have done ok. Or maybe the action and the plot doesn’t fit well together. And the other noticeable element is that Sabotage is over the top gruesome. But sadly that red stuff is not adding value than disgust.

However keeping all that aside the viewers would watch this till the end only because it has this extra pumped action figures and big bullets flying in all directions. Director David Ayer has made sure that those were done right.

The Monuments Men (2014) Rating Genre 2/5 | Overall 2/5

Biography | Drama | War

I’m wondering if it’s becoming a trend for big budget movies based on world war two to fall flat and unremarkable. Last year it was The Book Thief and this time it’s The Monuments Men. It’s certainly is curious to think about how a movie that has such great potential and big names in the cast fail to ignite any emotions other than disappointment.

This is loosely based on the non-fiction book, The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History, by Robert M. Edsel. It follows a team consist of experts of art and history whose mission is to save the countless art and other culturally important items from destruction at the end of world war two. As per order by Hitler the Nazi army has robbed the greatest pieces of art from around Europe and transported them to secret locations across Germany.

The Monuments Men does a fine job at emphasizing the important of saving these great historical pieces. In fact it’s the only positive point that comes to my mind after watching this. The rest of course is not so impressive. The character development is poor and that leads to flat emotional value when incidences occur surrounding some of them. The script looks stiff and has no effect on the actors to perform any better than they do. Though the big names like George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Kate Blanchet and John Goodman sounds like a winning combination, this movie could have being easily pulled off without anyone famous appearing in the cast. Because it’s not worth of such talent and there is no room for exceptional performance anywhere. Clooney being the director/writer and one of the lead actors in here should learn that sometimes it’s better to stick to one role at a time. Because it seems like there is definitely a great deal of responsibility at all those points for The Monuments Men and he has not being able to fill in properly.

It’s quite sad to remember that though The Monuments Men was a sizeable movie that could have being on route to award ceremonies this year will be forgotten soon with many other low valued productions that fills the theaters. My advice is if you really want to know what happened to The Monuments Men turn to History Channel.

Robocop (2014) Rating: Genre 3/5 | Overall 2/5

Back in 1987 Robocop was an instant hit. No surprise there as the franchise was clearly a new concept and the era was bringing some good action movies one after the other and Robocop was riding the new wave. After 27 years the half man half mech robot is rebooted and it certainly looks good. Though plot is slightly similar to the original since the new Robocop has vast differences to its presentation my intention here is not to compare the two movies but to concentrate on the new version.

The movie background runs in 2028. American drone and robot technology has evolved in to a stage where their wars off shore are largely handled by unmanned machines. Yet the domestic situation remains hostile to the machines and Omnicorp the large corporate responsible for building the robots are looking for ways to enter the local market. And they find their ticket when Alex Murphy a detective in the police department gets injured in the line of duty. Omnicorp transforms Alex in to a half man half machine Robocop with wrong intentions and Alex starts to disobey his programs letting his human side to take control.

At a glance it’s evident that the CG work done here is outstanding. Not like in the 80s now the industry is well equipped to make Robocop visually beautiful without using much of onset props. Therefore the man in machine looks flawless and the technology looks spick and span. And when the action kicks in it really blasts. Yet what makes the true contribution to the new Robocop is not how it looks but how it feels. The director spends a great deal of time (Almost exactly half of the runtime) conceptualizing and building the background to bring in the hybrid. The viewer gets a full picture of the political situation against the movement and the corporate strategy that goes in to building the Robocop. And giving a solid foundation the story of Alex Murphy is well put and it’s emotional. Though the entire movie is highly predictable there is joys in seeing things unveil.

Maybe the only complain that someone could have including me is the lack of action at the peak. It all seems too easy for a single Robot to bring down a large corporate like Omnicorp. However thinking of the point that this movie is just the start of a new sequel and there might be a next one coming, the lack of action is acceptable. On a final note though Robocop is kind of dumb it’s decent and entertaining.

Zulu (2013) Rating: Genre 3.5/5, Overall 2/5

Zulu starts with a good foundation for a movie based on a crime and investigation theme. However going deep in at some point it loses its momentum. It is not because it becomes poor in performances or production but because it loses its grip of being a strong plot that can be practical. Zulu could have being a different crime drama. But it sticks to some formula that does not completely impress the audience.

Zulu is a South African production which based on two South African police investigators who are investigating a brutal murder of a young white girl. When the investigation precedes it turns larger than murder and their team suffers lethal damages from the hand of drug dealers. Challenged by life and haunted by childhood memories and family backgrounds the two investigators struggles to get the bad guys.

Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom play the main roles and performance wise both of them does a fine job at it. However they both are bound by the plot and its limitations become victims of it. Like mentioned before from a certain point the plot slips away and suddenly it starts to feel like some Hollywood action film that runs out of boundaries. Maybe it’s the fault of the director Jérôme Salle who is known for writing of The Tourist (2010 starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie) which reminds me of another sloppy script.

All in all Zulu is not a police crime drama that can remain in the brain. It does a decent job at entertaining. If you like the cast like me you might probably enjoy it a bit more.

Kick Ass 2 (2013) Rating 2/5

I can remember the first installment of Kick Ass was certainly kick ass. But wonder what really happened to this one. Seems like it had run out of juice and struggled to make a mile on fumes.

This time Kick Ass joins a costumed super hero wannabe gang while the Hit Girl takes a side story. And the Red Mist decides to go all super evil changing his name to something that you can’t say in public the motherf… er!! While both the good and the bad teaming up making their own good and evil gangs the war is set.

As the plot itself seems mundane and ridiculously predictable only minor elements makes this movie watchable. One for sure is the Kick Ass effect which is thankfully to the previous movie. Definitely in this one there is no such effect. Secondly, the viewer’s expectation of the plot turning in to something more interesting. But it never happens. So everyone is left out with a few kicks and some colorful costumes with handful of witty lines. Good to watch if you’re really bored and has nothing else to do.

Red 2 (2013) Rating 2/5

Red 1 was never a masterpiece neither its seconds installment. But it delivers what it’s supposed to. That’s action and comedy. However action and comedy both has some mildness towards it. There are few car chases, hand to hand combats that pop the mind but other than that it’s not bouncy enough. Same goes with the humor. Sometimes there is nothing to laugh about. The cast is cool though there is heavy under utilization of talent. Red 2 is good for casual watching when you feel like you need something to keep the brain stimulated.

Now You See Me (2013) Rating 2/5

Now You See Me (2013) Rating 2/5

I expected to see the Illusionist and what do I get? Simply nothing. This movie is a big unpractical scam.  And what’s funny is the only things you can really rely at the end are the magic and whenever it hits the reality its looks like fantasy. I thought magic supposed to be exactly the opposite. If a four member team can take FBI on a ride as it’s shown here and they can actually pull it off this way the director must be pretty hallucinating. And the number of plot holes in this is huge. The only reason a fan might stick with this movie is that with the expectation at the end that there will be some kind of a big twist will put everything at the right place. But closing to the end everything goes wrong one after the other. Sad to say this is a concert hall size flashy disappointment.

Pain and Gain (2013) Rating 2/5

This is a true story? Yep it is. But maybe this is how a movie can give a hilarious face to dark criminals (no pun intended) and unspeakable crimes which can actually makes you feel like its joy to be a criminal. By all meaning this is not a drama or even closer to it. It’s a comedy filled with mainstream action and mundane acting with a story that doesn’t fall either to extreme nor weak. But at one point you might feel like it’s not getting anywhere and it’s just too lame. Can’t really blame you for feeling that way because it is pretty dumb. Could be because of that the true story element has to be reminded once again in the middle of the story. Because, it is very easy to forget. People who like fitness might have something to like about the characters but for the rest I’m not sure if there is anything to offer. There is true potential for this story if it was done with more passion.

The Liability (2012)

I have seeing quite a bit of British gangster movies. Some of course are gems and this definitely not one of them. It’s quite brutal and at the same time funny but doesn't really serves any purpose. There is crime and bad language and crime once again and its goes on and on. And at times tries very hard to be intelligent but it doesn't really go there. The only thing that kept me going was the cinematography and some interest in the plot. And it had a bollywood ending.

Take me Home Tonight (2011)

Though the humor is quite good this can be categorized as another romantic comedy with no exceptions. It does have many witty lines wrapped up in a usual love story. And a couple and their friends that makes the plot spicier. Other than the light minded viewing and the ample amount of laughs its nothing much. Recommend it for leisure viewing and for fans looking for love and laughs but nothing serious.

In the Land of Blood and Honey (2011)

I respect the fact that Angelina Jolie has taken a deep look at the war torn backdrop of the Bosnian war and actually came up with a script that makes some sense. But still comparing with ample amount of movies based on wars and conflicts this miserably fails to make a mark. Other than the considerably high production value and the mind shattering brutality filled scenes the love story that suppose to be the heartbeat of the whole movie seems to be making less sound. I was hoping to see a climax that would prove me wrong but guess this is not one of those movies.

Dredd (2012)

Well just as I expected this movie sucks. I just wanted to see how high up it is in the suck meter. And believe me it’s pretty high. There is no worthy plot, action, animation or acting in this. Just some too reddish body parts and eye candy high speed camera sequences.  Apart from that it reminds a bit of Raid Redemption and boy RR is so much better than this. Anyone who watched it in 3d must have loved the floating body parts and gushing blood all over the glasses. But when it comes to 2d it is not nearly a movie that I can call to be a remake of the Judge Dredd I saw long time back.

Step Up Revolution (2012)

Step Up Revolution (2012)
Drama | Music | Romance

Step up was new back in 2006 but not anymore. We all know it’s about dancing and we all know that every time the story is about a very good looking young couple who strive to make their dancing dreams come true. And this movie is nothing but the same. Only thing different is actors and the moves. Honestly the story is nothing but lame and stupid. I don’t wanna sweat trying to justify it. What are awesome are the dance sequences and the cinematography. They are simply breathtaking and insanely well done. However there were better ones in the previous movies but this has some unique sequences all together. Don’t see any exceptional performances or talents to mention of. Still what Tantum has done back in the day is the real deal.

That’s My Boy (2012)

That’s My Boy (2012)
Comedy

This is one of those movies which you cannot watch with your family ‘if’ you want your kids to respect elders and behave at school! It’s whacking funny and filled with filth and perverse vocabulary end to end. But it has an interesting plot going on in the middle of all that R rated material. Up to some extent it’s a really vulgar porn movie where anything can happen related to sex. Only difference is that the real action and the skin show are missing. But I cannot honestly say that Sandler delivers what he is supposed to. For some reason he has degraded himself from being a great comedian to an average performer from the line of movies he appeared in the recent past. This adds to the same list and nothing more. It’s good for some dirty laughs only.

Abraham Lioncoln : Vampire Hunter (2012)
Action | Fantasy | Horror

When I wanted to watch this all I expected was to see some good action and animation and that’s what exactly it delivered. Other than that there is no unique plot, acting nor drama here. It’s just another big action vampire flick that won’t stay in your mind. ‘Maybe’ if I watched this on 3D I would have liked it a wee bit better.

Safe (2012)

Safe (2012)
Action | Thriller

What kind of movies can you usually expect from Jason Statham? Drama with good plot! Naah are you crazy? Action with good plot! Not quite but you’re close.  Awesome action movies with no plot!! Ding!!! You got that right. And here is the latest winner. SAFE is a movie made fun to watch with thumping action but if you take the plot serious you might die with malnutrition. It’s just kicks punches and shooting bullets but no brains. The action cinematography is somewhat one of a kind. Gives more of a first person shooter gamer perspective. And killing people is made easy like eating breakfast. And I honestly don’t know if you really wanna kill that much people to make a movie. The rest is just meh!
