Million Dollar Arm (2014): Ratings – Genre 3/5, Overall 2.5/5

Sports movies come in all ages, speeds, throws and color. And most of them are very entertaining and satisfying and more than anything they are emotionally inspirational. Every year at least there is one sports movie that makes big news and I don’t know if Million Dollar Arm is that movie so far. However this movie makes a real mark as it has a different mood and a flavor than any of the previously famous sports themed movies. The reality show and south Asian flavor combo is indeed something beautiful to see on the screen.

JB (Jon Hamm) is a sports contractor who is desperately looking for a talent to sign up as his company is reaching no fruitful businesses for some time. After failing in a raw he comes up with a brilliant idea of seeking for talent in far India. Pushed for unrealistic deadlines from his investors, JB launch his Million Dollar Arm reality show campaign in India seeking for the fastest pitcher for Baseball in a country which Baseball has no  significant value.

The first quarter of the movie looks and feels familiar. A failed agent looking for a strong comeback is not the freshest of ideas out there. But as the story evolves it reaches untested territories and after sometime it reaches a solid peak that holds the movie on a steady state. There is a cool down period somewhere in the middle which builds the stage for the emotionally strong events to take place afterwards. Being a movie which is based on true events the director has put some good effort to keep the fans entertained throughout. I can’t say I was bored at any stage of the movie though there are phases where it falls in to average.

Jon Hamm who is seldom seeing in movies but holds the title for one the most powerful TV characters of all time in Mad Men brings in energy to JB’s character. The movie evolves around JB but the rest of the characters even how important and strong they are is not given enough attention as I feel. This is a bit of a letdown as some characters especially the Indian boys could have being more prominent if they were introduced from the start of the movie which could have bought in more dramatic approach to the whole plot. But Million Dollar Arm is a very entertaining movie which of course the entertainment side is stronger than the sports side at times. So I will not call this as the best sports movie I have seeing but it’s a movies I enjoyed from the start to end.

Generation Iron (2014)

When it comes to sports I guess Bodybuilding is the most underrated and misunderstood sport out there. The true fact is that even majority of the people who are involved in it has no idea what it really is but only the true professional bodybuilders does. And that community is very small and they strive day in and day out in the name of sport, dedication, victory and glory. The road to success of professional bodybuilding is not paved with anything soft but with amazing amounts of hard work, mind striking volumes of dedication and could be the most enduring self-discipline and control than any other sport. In fact it is not just a sport but a lifestyle which means there are no breaks, no holidays or no shortcuts. Generation Iron is a rare documentary that follow few of the best bodybuilders of our time on their way to compete on 2012 Mr. Olympia title which is the prime honor a bodyduilder can receive.

Generation Iron follows its 1977 golden classic Pumping Iron stared by Arnold Schwarzenegger and no doubt the most seeing and most talked about bodybuilding documentary ever made. Both these documentaries are made by Vlad Yudin and from 70s to now comparatively there are massive differences in movie making yet the same volume of passion for the sport is visible. The real success of Generation Iron and Pumping Iron is that it directly applies to the hearts and minds of the people who are truly faithful to the sport.

This time Generation Iron follows 3 times Mr. Olympia Phil Heath and his direct rival Kai Greene, Branch Warren, Dennis Wolf, Victor Martinez, Hidetada Yamagishi as well as ambitious newcomer Ben Pakulski and European sensation Roelly Winklaar. For fans of the sport these are very familiar names and the movie gives lot of insight to their lifestyles and backgrounds. The movie does a fair job at giving decent and equal coverage to the story of each and it is one reason as a documentary it is a bit too long than most other of same genre. But in my opinion the length was required and it does not work negatively.

Generation Iron tries to provide important background information about the sport and the athletes for anyone who does not understand the sport. However there is always a limitation of what can be shown and how it can be understood. Maybe for anyone who does not follow this sport Generation Iron could be a bit too much to handle. And it may not change their misconceptions but fuel them a bit more. However it is understood that Generation Iron is not only a documentary about bodybuilding but it was paving its way for a certain objective which is the final show down of Mr. Olympia contest.

As a fan of the sport I certainly loved this documentary. There are only very few material of such can be found anywhere and this goes beyond a training video or just self-boosting bodybuilder movie.

The Armstrong Lie (2013) : Rating 4/5

The Armstrong Lie is a documentary that takes a deep look at one of the most horrendous best kept lies of the sports history, the rise and fall of Lance Armstrong after being disgracefully accused for doping. He was once known as the greatest cyclist the world has ever seeing who won 7 Tour De France titles from 1999-2005 after battling and recovering from cancer.

After winning 7 titles and being away for 4 years in retirement Armstrong makes a surprise come back in 2009 with hopes of winning another title and raising funds for cancer patients. The director of this documentary Alex Gibney was hired to make a documentary of the comeback of Armstrong and he has being covering Armstrong’s sports history for quite some time. But as the doping scandal came to light the original project was never finished. But in 2013 Gibney decided that he needs a proper ending to his documentary and re-opened it after Armstrong makes a confession on Oprah Winfrey show.

This documentary is quite easy and interesting to follow. For someone with even a mild knowledge about professional cycling and Armstrong it can be digested without much effort. While having a deep look at Armstrong’s sporting career and the doping dilemma the documentary effectively provides important background information about the sport itself that fuels the main plot. And it manages to tell the story from several perspectives than being biased in to one point of view, the intention being the viewer to have their own conclusion of what had really happened. There ample amount of historical footage of practice runs, races, press conferences, court trials and other video that builds a strong case relating to each other. Obviously for being someone like Armstrong most of his well-known part of his entire life is on film somewhere. The challenge which the director goes through is to filter the most relevant and create a flow that doesn’t over hype or dull to the viewer. In my opinion the job was well done.

The Armstrong Lie is a powerful piece of documentary film making. And it would give you new perspective of what really went on with Lance Armstrong. Maybe you have followed his case eagerly while it was hot but now since things have gone a bit cold a relook would be ideal. Just as Armstrong phrase many times it felt ok at the time.

Rush (2013) Rating 4.5/5

“Men love women… but men love cars more”. Gentlemen start your engines to witness the greatest sports movie that the world has seeing so far about fast cars and rivalry sportsmanship. To be honest I never expected Rush to be this adrenaline pumping and magnificent. What I had in mind was cars, speed and some historical facts lined up to become a watchable story. But here I’m blown away by this sheer fantastic movie that packs everything that a good sports movie should have. From very start to the end it is nothing but a lightning speed drive that will put you in a formula 1 coma.

To begin with any serious petrol head is obsessed with F1 no doubt. And this movie brings out the best of the sport plus a very powerful true story of the famous rivalry on track between English born sexy James Hunt and the Austrian hard headed disciplined and ambitious Niki Lauda. The story starts in early 70s where they both meet for the first time in F3 with low profiles and low budgets and the sparks of rivalry appears after a head to head battle on the track that ends with Lauda on the dirt. But soon they both ends up driving for big teams in the big F1 cars and the burning desire to defeat one another fuels them to go to extremes. And the story unfolds their true spirits and the strong will to become the champion defeating the rest and most importantly their key rivals that puts a whole spin to the movie beyond the cars and speed brings in.

While all the drama happens between these two the movie profoundly creates a beautiful atmosphere with brilliant cinematography and powerful score by Hans Zimmer that brings the viewer to the race track like never before. As I recall the last time I was this impressed by something related to F1 was after watching Senna which is a documentary. But Rush brings the whole sport to the viewer so up close that you actually feel the tension corner after corner when the race is on. And you realize that there is a chill running down your spine and you’re not even holding a steering wheel. Now that’s what I call movie making. Rush puts you in a place that so distant but makes it so familiar.

Beautiful performances by Chris Hemsworth (Proving he is something than a super hero character with a hammer)  and Daniel Brühl  alongside the over the top directing of Ron Howard, Rush is one hell of a ride that you should not miss. Bravo!!

Trouble With the Curve (2012)

Trouble With the Curve (2012)

Drama | Sport

Last time I saw Eastwood as a coach or anything related to a sport was in Million Dollar Baby. And if you have the slightest expectation of seeing that same qualities with Trouble with the Curve you are gravely mistaken. This is just another sports movie which doesn’t even comes close to what Eastwood can actually do. And to be honest the very reason I watched it from start to end was because of Eastwood and for a fact he doesn’t let his role down. But this movie is not really good material for him to be involved with.

As a sport movie this packs some mild gravity and punch for the game. And it’s funny than being a serious drama but I don’t see this to be tagged as a comedy anywhere. Anyways acting wise it’s all good. Cinematography not quite creative or extraordinary. I’ve seeing great inspiring sports movies in the past couple of years so this comparatively is a letdown.

The Philly Kid (2012)

The Philly Kid (2012)
Action | Drama | Sports

If you have seeing ‘Warrior’ or 'The Fighter' you will be quite disappointed in this movie. But if you didn’t, there is a probability that you will like this lots. However being a low budget movie this delivers some real good and strong punches and kicks. There is power and balance but for it to be truly effective it’s too short. It just runs for 90mts and that cramps up the plot a lot and you actually feel that there is acceleration without value addition. The plot of course is not anything unique and well predictable. But for a fan of fights and fitness it will sure to pump some adrenaline while watching. Yet overall it’s just  another action movie. Could have being much much better.

My Way (2011) (Original Title Mai Wei –South Korea)

My Way (2011) (Original Title Mai Wei –Japan)

War | Sports | Drama | History

From the handful of big budget war movies that is made away from Hollywood, coming from Japan this movie is just plain epic. Said to be based on true events this is not the routine war movie that’s only about the battles or the power struggle. It carries an amazing story line right throughout that screams of humanity and the good of heart even in the most daring situations. The plot starting from Korea through Russia, France and ending in UK it’s also a sports movie which is very unlikely to pal up with a war movie. The passionate minds of two rival marathon runners through the harsh journey in the time of wwii is nothing but mind blowing. The production quality is insane. I don’t recall such epic and lively war scenes in any recent movie that I have seeing. Only drawback I’d see is the extra long running time of 2.5 hrs. But this is a good entertainer and a heart warmer. Do not miss it!

Born to Race (2011)

Action | Drama | Sport

If you’re thirsty for some street racing action and didn’t get a proper dose after the first installment of Fast and the Furious, then maybe this will help a bit. Not that it’s great on its nature but it does has some cool rides and sick performances. The plot is almost identical to F&F Tokyo Drift (Except for the Japan and drift part) and there doesn’t deliver much uniqueness. But like I mentioned before the rides are cool. Especially the main leads on the 2003 Subaru and the 2011 Mustang GT. And the last race with a slow mo crash makes you forget everything and drop the jaw in the living room.

3/5

Synopsis: Born To Race is the story of Danny Krueger, a rebellious young street racer on a collision course with trouble. Million Dollar Baby (2004)

Drama | Sport

When you say that a movie is beautiful, most of time what comes straightly to your mind can be a romantic movie filled lovely people and a happy ending. But in a very strange way this hardcore dramatic boxing flick redefine the beautiful movie perception. It speaks of determination, courage, and the sweet taste of conquering dreams and the most hurtful bitterness of defeat. Yet all this mixed up so well that once you finish it you will know that you have watched one of the greatest movies you will ever see while you’re alive. Gracias to Clint Eastwood and Hilary Swank for their creativity and for working the miracle.

Synopsis: A hardened trainer/manager works with a determined woman in her attempt to establish herself as a boxer.

SENNA (2010)

This documentary covers the unparallel and legendary life and the tragic death of the Brazil born greatest sportsman and the most amazing Formulae one racing driver the world has ever seeing, Ayarton Senna. Starting his driving life from pro carts and winning 3 world championships before his untimely death at the age of 34 in 1994, Senna has done what many would say impossible more than once.

This film follows Senna’s racing career very closely with ample footage from the past starting from the 80’s including news and TV footage and family videos. And it gives a deep insight to the rivalry he faced from the great French co team mate Allen Prost and the struggle he had to put upon the F1 committee at times where his actions were condemned and resulted in suspension from the track.

When you dive in to half of this wonderful film, you will start to realize what a wonderful sportsman Senna was on the track and equally or beyond a normal person off the track. Senna was a great patriot who bought laughter to millions of his fans from Brazil, in a time where the country had no hope and engulfed in political instability and poverty. Privately very humble to his beginnings and sometimes shy he donated ample to the benefit of his fellow men.

Not just a hero in Brazil but Senna soon becomes the most muttered name in the world of racing where at times he is treated like a god more than a super star. Though he cheats death many times and fearlessly believed in the supreme power of god, his life tragically comes to an end at the peak of his career with a fatal crash. As the whole world lies speechless with tears filled in their eyes and memories of the greatest driver they have ever known, Senna’ s life story ends way before anyone expected.

This documentary is simply touching. And it will touch your deepest corner of the heart not just because it’s a good production but because Senna himself is an eternal flame.

My score 4.5/5

RUN FATBOY RUN (2007)

Simon Pegg does it again. In his own British style of humor and short moments of surprised looks he nails this flick.

The movie is about Dennis, and his x girlfriend Libby, and their kid Jake. Dennis who was once a careless man (and still is) left Libby on the altar on their wedding day 5 years back while she was pregnant and ran away! Yet Libby gives him permission to come in to her life again for the sake of Jake. Working as a security guard in a woman garment shop Dennis lives a much disorganized life, until one day he meets Whit who is a successful man from US and apparently got a crush on Libby. Realizing that he is about to loose Libby for life as Whit being a totally better person than him Dennis comes up with a crazy strategy to show his love for her. That’s to run in a marathon!!

First of all I must say that this flick is utterly hilarious. Thought it doesn’t have this one huge moment of laughter it will just keep you laughing from start to the end. Every move and word comes out of Dennis has something sarcastic, funny or towards the end more seriousness and caring. And he does conquer his quest in style.

This movie is all about a man who decides to change himself for the only person he loves. Though he realizes it way late he quickly starts to build up a strategy and work towards it. And there are few good lessons in it. Like sticking in to a problem how hard it can be and to see it though without running away from it.

THE FIGHTER (2010)

The Fighter (2010)
Genre: Drama, Biography, Sport

Director: David O. Russell

Writers: Scott Silver , Paul Tamasy

Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale and Amy Adams

My score 3.5/5

By now if you have not heard about ‘The Fighter’ in some way I believe you were in some coma for the last 6 months and missed all the good movie news, award nights and web chatter. If so please note that ‘The Fighter’ is a movie which made huge success and very positive reviews and big time awards like Golden Globe and Oscar was also in its favor. And it was one of the movies which was based on true life events out of few which was making box office and topping up best movie award nominations for 2010. It seems like Hollywood is finding more unique stories out of the real life events year by year and fans like us say ‘wow’ and ponder about the real life people in them more and more. In my case I don’t know how it is to be a boxer or how it is to be living in a small Us town in the 80’s so may not make that much sense knowing it’s a true story but there is some appeal in the whole art of movie making and touching the hearts of the audience. ‘The Fighter’ does is pretty damn well.

Based on true life events of two brothers Micky and Dicky who are bonded for good and bad and their path to fame in the boxing ring. ‘The Fighter’ has it wonderful moments. Micky played by Mark Wahlberg and Dicky played by Christian Bale who are similar in many ways with long term ambitions but totally different on the other hand who just cannot find a balance in their lives. Micky is an ambitious young boxer who struggles to make some wins and play big time. But he is under the shadow of his controlling mother and brother Dicky who was once a champion but wasted his life without cause for drugs. Micky faces criticism, trouble and humiliation for failure and he takes the blame for himself while Dicky gives himself up for his addiction.  When Micky finally realizes that he need a break from his brother and his family and do something for himself, he makes the move with his newly found girlfriend Charlene. Finding a new trainer and a manager he sets up to train hard and bring some trophies while his family and girlfriend tries to tear him up both ways.

‘The Fighter’ has some several very strong performances. No doubt Mark Wahlberg was dedicated and had concentrated well on his character and even stunning is the performance of Bale. We know Bale for his crazy performances and insane dedication toward his role from the past. I was shocked the when I saw him in ‘The Machinist’ back in 2004. It seems like he did it all over again for portraying Dicky. Simply superb performance which ultimately gave him the best supporting actor at Oscars this year. Even the rest of the cast is well played. Mickys mother Alice and girlfriend Charlene is wonderfully played by Melissa Leo and Amy Adams respectively.

Well-made script and cinematography will quickly push you back in time with great detail and feeling. David O. Russell doesn’t ring much bells as a director other than one of my all-time favorite ‘Three Kings’ (1999). However here he has made his strong mark in the silver screen.

But there are few reasons which I will note rate is as a must watch movie. The lead character at times looks like the supporting roll. Dicky takes more audience than Micky and the story go out of balance maybe. It’s not a big issue as such but it should not be like that. And at times some scenes are just too chaotic and becomes a struggle between characters. If you had a boxing movie in mind this is not exactly what it will deliver. I would like it more if the real boxing had more weight comparatively to the troublesome life of Micky and Dicky. Well that’s how I feel.
