Lone Survivor (2013) Rating 4/5

Movies based on heroism on the battle ground are not an unfamiliar territory for the movie fans. And once in a while a movie comes out which strikes so hard that you realize that somewhere out there some people risk their lives for the betterment of many more sleeping at home. Lone Survivor is indeed a brilliant movie of that kind seeing seldom from Hollywood. And to make it even better it’s based on actual events taken place.
Lone Survivor is the cinematic adaptation by Peter Berg of the book of same name. The plot is based on a US failed mission Operation Red Wings taken place in Afghanistan. The mission objective was to track a high priority Taliban leader Ahmad Shah and a four member covert operatives team was sent out. The story unveils their mission starting from base camp to a remote village in the Hindu Kush mountain range through a tough terrain on foot. While the team is equipped with latest technology and experienced personal an unexpected incidence pushes them the deviate from the plan. And they find themselves surrounded by enemy insurgents and hope of getting out alive becomes thinner and thinner.

Some call this the best after Black Hawk Down and I pretty much agree with it. But then there is the Special Forces (2012) a French movie that comes very close to this in my opinion but seems many Hollywood critics despise it (Well that’s their problem). But what’s the best movie is not the fact to highlight here. It’s the fact that Lone Survivor is filled with brilliant performances, action sequences and top of all mind blowing amounts of heroism, courage and patriotism.

Lone Survivor has good production quality and direction. Though there are no surprises to the plot or anything never seeing before in a war flick, this runs right through predictable points without sweating much. Relatively there is not enough character building done throughout but the lack of that kind of drama is barely noticed after the guns starts to fire. It is quite right to say that Lone Survivor has one of the best battle sequences that do not include heavy artillery. And it’s pretty obvious that many stunt actors have broken bones performing it.

A good war movie is not in terms of how bloody it is but in ways of how successful it is in justifying a war. It seems like Lone Survivor has done a decent job at it while the whole war again terrorism is at a questionable point.

Mulholland Drive (2001) Rating – 4/5

When you start to watch this you have no idea what you’re getting yourself in to. It’s like this ‘Inception’ where there is a dream inside a dream. But here you really cannot explain it that easily. Was it a dream or was it some bizarre sequence of events that took place for real is one of the biggest questions the viewer left out with. And trust me the questions do not end there. If you get together in a group and watch this one time you will hear many contradicting theories of what went down. But none maybe what’s ‘really’ gone down. There are numerous clues, twists and subtle glimpses of things which the viewer may not be able to explain in one go. This quality makes Mulholland Drive one of the trickiest and mind frying movie experiences ever.

Performance wise it’s brilliant. Watts deliver a strong performance along with other supporting roles. The thrills, suspense and even sex are equally powerful and grab the viewer from the spinal code just when you don’t expect it. When the movie hits the somewhat separately noticeable second half all the theories the viewer had about the first half is ruthlessly destroyed. And to make it worse a fresh set of mind boggling mysteries takes its place. If you find yourself stunned or lost or even angry when the end titles rolling, remember this crucial truth. You are not alone!

Pawn (2013)

This movie proves that big budget and big stars are not always the key factors of making an action thriller good. What make this one good are the plot and the flow. It’s another suspense thriller that evolves around some events that takes place within a short time period. Once the background is set the whole story is one straight ride but it has few good twists to spice it up. It’s violent but it’s not overly gory either. Violence is used up the correct volumes just like the language. All in all it has a happy start and a happy ending with some good thrills in between.

We Need to Talk About Kevin (2012)

Mystery, Suspense, Drama

Warning! This movie is highly explosive and might blow right inside your brain. And no precaution will make you less emotionally damaged. Trust me it’s that effective.

It delivers a very unique plot in thundering mystical manner. Most of the time the viewer is kept in the dark with a mix of color red spattered everywhere, making us to figure out the disturbed relationship between a struggling mother and a stubborn child.  You may feel sorry for some people and desperately angry with another but yet it’s not guaranteed who’s wrong and who’s not. There is obviously crime but that crime leads to unimaginable pain and anger.

I must say Tilda Swinton delivers a performance of the year on this film and she deserves lot more attention than this.

“Eva: Mommy was happy before Kevin came along. Now she wakes up every morning and wishes she was in France!”

4.5/5

Synopsis: The mother of a teenage boy who ends up doing a serious crime tries to deal with her grief - and feelings of responsibility for her child's actions.
