The Wind Rises (2013) Genre: 4.5/5 Overall 4/5

For anyone who is familiar with the earlier works of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli from Japan should not be needing an introduction to this movie. The Wind Rises is a long awaited anime from Miyazaki and just as expected it is a wonderful piece of cinema where Japanese animators have yet again proven that they cannot be compared to any other animators but themselves. The Wind Rises is special in its own ways and this time more than being entirely fictional the plot follows the biography of Jiro Horikoshi (1903–1982), designer of the Mitsubishi A5M and its successor, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero air crafts. Both the air crafts were known to have played a key role in the WW2 and a pride of Japanese warfare.

The story unfolds at the time of Jiro is a small boy having big dreams of flying. But due to his issues with eye sight he decides to design air crafts instead. And this big dreamer works nonstop towards achieving his goals. The story also follows his love life with a girl he devotedly fall in love with and their short yet beautiful love story. The combination of these two one mechanic and one emotional story lines strangely yet wonderfully has woven a memorable movie together. It’s indeed fantastic to witness how Miyazaki has put these two stories in to one and give them equal capacity without harming the essence of the whole movie.

Just as all Miyazaki movies The Wind Rises has lot of laughs, fantasies, love and then brief moments of sadness and tears. All of this is depicted through breathtaking cinematography created via paintings that at times makes your jaw drop. There is no doubt that Japanese anime artist are the best environmental painters in the world and each scene shows it over and over. I had to pause the movie so many times just to get my eyes full of those amazing details on the frames. This here my friends is pure art and you cannot escape its beauty.

Beautiful story line that has a perfect start, middle and ending combined with correct flow The Wind Rises is another unforgettable anime. It is a must watch for anime lovers.

From Up On Poppy Hill (2011)

From Up On Poppy Hill (2011)
Animation | Drama

This is another warm Japanese anime which is equally beautiful in presentation and its story. In presentation it is a mix of breathtaking drawings that are so detailed and joy to look at. Every frame is so well planned you cannot honestly fathom the magnitude of the beautiful minds working to bring them to life. The era of Japan in 60s where the story takes place and the culture and lifestyle is so well portrayed.

As a story it speaks of a blooming love between two students living in a harbor village cleverly approached using a threatened club house which is about to be demolished.  Without realizing their love starts to grow just as they start to work together to save the club house and the results become promising. And a heartfelt background plot takes place evolving in to both of their family’s pasts. This wonderful mix of enchanting animation and story a movie like this cannot get better. However it is not the best from Studio Gibly but considering their previous creations.

Vexille (2007) (Japan)

Vexille (2007) (Japan)
Animation | Sci Fi | Action

Vexille is another brainchild of Japanese animation geniousness. You know that Japs kick Hollywood’s butt hard when it comes to anime and Sci Fi. Vexille is flashy, sexy and futurastic! Set in an age where Japan is isolated from the rest of the world due to their experiments on human biogenetics a group of US secret soldiers enter the Japanese borders to find out the depths of their secrets the story is gripping and thrilling. The animation quality is sheer eye pleasing and when the action sequences hit the screen there is no return but to get involved and blast some mechs. For my amusement there is quite a bit of emotional value too in this than I anticipated. Wonderfully crafted animation and touching plot makes this movie a worthwhile to watch. There are few down points when it comes to facial expressions and voice acting but guess the bigger good doesn’t make you find them as real problems.

Mardock Scramble – The First Impression (2010)

Mardock Scramble – The First Impression (2010)
Animation | Action | Drama

Some say anime is twisted and complicated. I don’t agree most of the time but with Murdock Scramble I have no choice. It will take some time for the viewer to fathom the plot the good the bad and the ugly. The visuals are purely pragmatic and artistically grand. The plot  as I mentioned before is a little too complex to understand at first but once you get to know the corners it’s a free flow. However I'm not overly impressed of this movie. The main reason is that it looks and feel too artificial. Science fictions and anime’s are most of the time artificial but this one feels too distant. And it’s quite short with a time span of little over an hour. There are two more installments to the story…. But I won’t check them out.

Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989) (Japanese)

Animation | Adventure | Fantasy

Japanese artists and movie makers have stunned the world of anime for a very long time now. No other movie makers even the big budget Hollywood has come close to the masterpieces the Japs we capable of creating. This flick is one of those touching and utterly mind and eye pleasing piece of anime work. Yet again the plot is fantastic with a touch of fantasy and reality mix together to be strangely realistic. The drawings are mind blowing and also close to heart. All hardcore anime fans will not miss this.
