Chunking Express (1994): Rating 4.5/5

Maybe the most bewildering thing about Kar Wai Wong movies is that, they seem too normal while you watch it but once done they start to haunt you. And they are overly narrative and sometimes overly expressive in minor elements of the plot yet not so detailed and mysterious about some of the far deep and seem to be important areas. And it seems like the director intentionally hide certain things from the viewers and viewers are left to go through a journey of discovery them selves if they want more answers than the ones are obvious. Yes strikingly more answers we find more things left to ponder. Chunking Express is such mysteriously touching piece of artistic cinema that boils down to a very simple yet very complicated story about everyday people.

The story is woven around two Hong Kong cops. At a glance they both share certain similarities as characters and circumstantially and losing their girl friends is one of the prominent ones. Chunking Express deals with their emotional despair and hope as they struggle to overcome the uncertainty and the loneliness they feel in their post relationship recovery period. The beauty of the script is that these two characters have no intention to overlap yet but only to connect deep down in the observance of the viewer.

Chunking Express expresses it self-using narratives. And these narratives in the form of thoughts of the characters who speaks to them selves are very powerful and strangely unique. When you listen to them closely it opens up a variety of emotions filled pathways in to the characters life. The viewers get to explore these characters who at times are bold but most of the time mysterious in their own ways. And the director builds these characters and their behaviors in to a certain point where they become strangely familiar after sometime but the viewers deep down knows that they are not. But follow their lead in their journey of sorrowful uncertainness.

The director very effectively uses cinematographic elements such at colors, camera movements and angles along with strong symbolism to build the plot. And just like his later work In the Mood for Love (2000) he uses music that is very character centric over and over again until it becomes a habit. Here he uses the classic California Dreaming by The Mamas & The Papas and blend it so well with the story by the time movie the ends it is so prominent as characters them selves. Maybe the most binding component the viewers unknowingly fall for is the ever-natural performances and the chaotic style of story telling. Though how simple the character or the events look at a glance it is not so uncommon for the viewer to struggle moment to moment to realize the depth they represent.

Chunking Express is a well-written and skillfully directed cinema by the renowned moviemaker Kar Wai Wong. His signature style is all over it and for anyone who is brave enough to experience it will discover the world in a unique way. Perhaps one of the most beautiful things about this movie is that you hardly notice that it touched you until you are left alone to ponder about it. And this moment of realization can happen anytime without an early warning. The trick is not to rush it.

Be with You (2004) Ratings: Genre 4.5/5 | Overall 3.5/5

Right from the start and from the very first scenes Be with You instantly reminded me of Japanese animations. And just like those animations this movie is mesmerizingly beautiful both in story and cinematography. And this could be the best romantic plot that I have ever come across in a fantasy drama.  It is so heartwarming that it would be impossible for someone with a heart not to shed a tear or two while enjoying this amazing tale of romance.

Takumi (Shidô Nakamura) is a middle aged widower living with his son Yuji (Akashi Takei) in a scenic village. He struggles to raise his son amidst his volatile heath condition and it’s being a year since his wife Mio (Yûko Takeuchi) has passed away. Broken by his loss yet ambitious by the love for his kid Takumi does his best to keep Yuji company. But Yuji believes that his mother has gone to a distant star and she will return on the rainy season. And it seems to be that even Takumi believes in the same story and secretly wishes for her return. And when the rainy season starts they both are astonished from a visit from someone special.

Be with You is nearly two hours long, which is kind of bit too long for a romantic movie at a glance. But the wonderful plot and the simple yet spell binding beauty of the flow will keep viewers gazing at the screen. The story unfolds little by little with flawless and artistic frames and touching script and acting. Though the other cast is entirely new for the Hollywood movie fans Shidô Nakamura who plays Takumi is familiar as he have done some memorable roles in western movies. But the real treat of Be with You is the child actor Akashi who steals the show with his cuteness. And there are some scenes that you would wish that you were his parents so that this kid will not have to cry again. And Yûko Takeuchi who plays Mio makes the character glamorous with her charm. The combination of these three performances is simply and truly touching.

While being a fantasy and as a movie with live actors Be with You is a remarkable one. It is based on a novel of same name and as per the reactions it seemed like the readers have loved it as well. To be honest this easily could be one of the best romantic movies I will remember. And for a moment it felt like Just Like Heaven (2005).

Highway (2014) Ratings: Genre 3/5 Overall 2.5/5

(Contains spoilers)

While Highway is definitely taking a different route (no pun intended) than being one of the mundane Indian movies thanks to the acclaimed direction of Imitiaz Ali, it fails to deliver a strong message due to its very prominently feeble plot holes. Mainly to this fact in one hand Highway stands up to be a great film and on the other hand it’s a disaster.

The story is fresh to the Indian cinema. A rich girl who gets kidnapped by a gang ultimately finds her freedom of mind through her kidnappers and eventually becomes fond of the gang leader. It’s a straight forwards plot and become a bit predictable down the line. But the plot it’s steadily developed and the events are rolling out without creating too much distraction.

Speaking of the good of Highway, the number one attraction is the cinematography. It’s like you have taken a road trip across India and the sites are beautiful. Right from the start till the very end the movie goes through different geographical locations and each one of them has a certain glory to deliver. Apart from that each camera angle and scene is complied with great care which make Highway a mind pleasing movie. And then comes the good acting. The girl Veera is skillfully played by Alia Bhatt and this seems to be her best performance so far for being an actress who has few titles under her belt. The gang leader Mahabir is played by Randeep Hooda who has done several powerful artistic roles earlier seems to have a perfect fit for this role. As for the plot goes I’m not entirely pleased of the way the whole plot works out but it’s a key reason why I watched till the end. It is not bad but it’s not great either.

As I mentioned earlier what makes Highway week are the plot holes. There are few very prominent ones. For example except for the gang leader the rest of them seem to be very nice chaps. They are all smiley good hearted people. This is fundamentally wrong. They leave the kidnapped girl in a room full of equipment hand untied and doors unlocked. And when she flees she fails to find a proper way out get exhausted and comes back. But on the next day a member from the gang leave the place get on a train and vanishes without much effort. Later on the gang including the head of the gang Mahabir (criminal mastermind and murderer) starts to trust this girl more than they should. This is also highly unlikely. They expose themselves and the girl to the public in many occasions. After many other minor plot imbalances comes the great blow. The police appear from nowhere and shoot Mahabir without warning. I’m not sure how the Indian police handle a kidnap rescue operation in real but at that point they actually kill the movie. It is understood that someone important has to die at the end but the way it happens is a complete let down. And it’s very clear that it is forced drama there onwards. And finally though I very much fond of Rahman’s magical music in Highway it kills the mood. Some songs barge in when you least expect it and it takes away the complete tone of the plot away.

The above negativities could have being easily ignored if Highway was a typical Indian movie. But the problem is it’s not and it’s supposed to be a very serious one. So there shouldn’t be any room for doubt. So Highway swings from a typical Hindi movie to a different drama over and over again. And the fans left with confusion.

The Bow (2005) Ratings Genre: 4/5 | Overall 3/5

Kim-duk Kim is a master of character, silence, atmosphere, and moods. His movies are all about complex yet different character studies and each one of them has a unique feeling. And most of the time his main characters does not speak much but the visual expressions speaks ample tones. The Bow is one of his seemingly very simple yet deeply complicated movies. While The Bow may not fall in to his best of works the entire movie brings a whole different flavor. And yet again the viewers are transformed in to a place surrounded by water just like his earlier masterpiece Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (2003) but this time it’s the sea and a boat.

The story surrounds and old man and a 16 year old girl who lives on a fishing boat. It seems like the girl was found by the old man at the age of 6 and since then she have not left the boat. It is apparent that the old man wishes to marry her when she turns 17. But things turn unexpectedly after a young man arrives and the girls become fond of him.

The Bow is entirely shot on a boat. And the only sounds you hear are the water and the squeaking sounds the boat makes often. But there is mild yet beautiful energy given with a calming sound track in most of the time synchs with an instrument the old man plays to relax. There are very few characters other than the old man and the girl. Giving similarity to Kim’s earlier movies these characters has no names. They are merely represented by an idea rather than identity. And there is a vast silence between each scene and the main cast hardly mutters anything. In fact the girl doesn’t say a single word the entire time. And yet the movie has many things to offer and it has a steadily building up plot. The viewers are left with wondering what’s next the whole time and the director manages to surprise them. And it all ends with supernaturalism mixed controversial sequence.

The Bow is not a masterpiece but it is definitely not mundane. Some may find it dull and uneventful but for some it could be the exact thought provoking movie experience they were looking for.

The Best Offer (2013) Rating: Genre 4/5 Overall 3/5

One of the number one reasons you should consider watching The Best Offer is because it’s directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. He is an Italian director who is well known for directing Cinema Paradiso (1988) and (1988) Malèna (2000) and certainly is a contemporary artist who knows what he is doing. And The Best Offer is indeed is a good offer for the viewers who does not settle in for mundane and puerile romance and mysteries. The journey through The Best Offer is quite slow and superficial yet at the end of it quite satisfying.

The lead role of the movie Virgil Oldman is an aged antiques dealer. He is well known for his profession and possesses a great deal of knowledge in the field of antiques and lives a luxurious life. However his interest for women is a mystery and no wife no family resides in a large house filled with valuable collectables from many eras. And some of these items which have being collected through backchannels and socially unaccepted illegal bargains seem to be his favorite private collection. But when he receives an offer from a lady named Clair to evaluate her heritage for auctioning Virgil’s life takes an interesting turn. Virgil becomes obsessed with 27 year old Clair but she hides many mysteries and Vigil intends to reveal them.

While the cinematography including camera, lighting and set creation is done beautifully the grand amount of detailing gone in to creating the pieces of art is outstanding. As the plot is heavily dependent on antique pieces of all sorts the cinematic representation of it is vital. Director has gone extra careful and the beauty of the movie is indeed enhanced by it. Then comes the strong performance by Geoffrey Rush and it seems like he was cut out to perform the character of rigid and egoistic Virgil. Finally but most importantly the plot which carefully unfold through the script creates severe enthusiasm. However at a point some things becomes predictable yet this point does not arrive until climax. So the mystery filled tale of romance has its own good run.

The Best Offer has seeing many mixed reactions so far. In my opinion the good about this movie is way beyond the mild negativities. Maybe the only complain is how practical all this can be but the mystery is well put and magnetic.

Blue is the Warmest Color (2013, French) Rating Genre: 3/5 Overall 2.5/5

It is quite a known and agreed idea that all sorts of art including movies from France have a special place when it’s regarding love and passion. However right at the start of reviewing this already controversial movie I must say that France has overdone it this time.  I believe that Blue is the Warmest Color (from this point onwards I’d call as BWC) does have potential to be a masterpiece in one hand but due to some very evident and painful negativities it has lost its rightful place.

The lead character Adèle (Adèle Exarchopoulos ) is a young and beautiful literature student who seems to be living the normal French life. But after a brief relationship with a fellow student who actually cared for her truly she realizes that men are not capable of igniting her passion. Searching for her desire Adèle meets Emma (Léa Seydoux) at a gay bar and they become extremely close. Adèle discovers love and passion from Emma and she completely melt in front of her.

It is important to understand that this is not the first movie made based on gay love and this will not be the last. The world will be seeing more and more of the kind in time to come and my worry is that does them have to be this detailed to prove a point. The last of this kind which I can recall which was pretty decent and beautiful was Kids are All Right (2010) from Hollywood. And another good example was A Single Man (2009) starring Collin Firth which was very powerful. But BWC crosses the fine line between art and porn not only once but several times proving that the movie is not actually made for art lovers but men who like seeing naked woman. In my opinion a movie is a movie until it keeps its secrets and once everything is revealed it turns in to something else. Not only sex but some other things like dancing, eating spaghetti, taking a shower (naked) is presented with lengthy scenes and detail which directly takes a toll at the duration of the movie which is exactly 3 hours.

Why I like this movie is for two reasons. One is the incredible and passionate chemistry between the lead roles (which I believe that could have being achieved even without the detailed sex scenes). But the true magnet of an attraction is Adèle Exarchopoulos (yes her screen name and real name is both the same) who does a fine job at acting. The director’s relationship towards her through the camera frame is very evident and her emotions pour out of her pretty eyes and lips nonstop. While the director tries to spice it up a bit more by showing her rear side a couple of times (with and without cloths) it’s her face that makes the painfully slow three hours worthwhile. There is nothing extraordinary to mention about cinematography other than the lighting used in bedroom scenes that was quite certain to give the viewer best viewing pleasure.

After I was done with BWC the inner arguments I had was ‘if’ this story was about an ordinary man and woman couple would that be this talked about. And ‘if’ the director has decided to remove some of the details and keep only the essence of it will it still be this controversial. The answer for both arguments I got was a no.

Still Mine (2013) Rating: Genre 4.5/5 | Overall 4/5

Drama | Romance

You must have seeing plenty of romantic movies about reckless love involving the blooming young  and the middle aged love with an understanding of a level higher. But you have not seeing love if you have not seeing Still Mine. This movie is a wonder of romantic genre thought it speaks of a tale of romance that is 61 years old yet getting strong day by  day. After being married for so long and seven children of their own and grand kids the Morrison’s keeps the flames burning strong.

Craig Morrison (James Cromwell) and Irene Morrison (Geneviève Bujold) are an old couple living in their farm residing in the bliss of old age. Craig though is in his 80s still strong and healthy devotes his time to take care of his wife Irene and her needs when she starts to show signs of declining memory. And he decides to build another more manageable home for them knowing the challenges he will have to endeavor in future. But challenged by the local authorities about the standards of the construction the Morrison’s affection grows stronger and their will power is tested.

The true beauty of Still Mine is in the sheer sweetness of the old couple. Even how aged and wrinkled they are the romance between them and their true understanding is simply overwhelming. James and Geneviève beautifully portray the characters in a way that the viewers would shed a tear seeing them in love. Each scene they are together is so wonderful that even their eyes speak. Still Mine delivers powerful emotions throughout and anyone would want such fairytale old age I’m sure.

Still Mine is a Canadian production directed by Michael McGowan. And it is based on true events.

Frozen (2013) Rating 2.5/5

Animations have come a long way. Year by year we see spectacular works which beats one over the other and most of the time the viewers are struck with amusement and surprises. Being said that it’s sad to say that Frozen is not one of those animations though it’s coming from Disney an expert.

When Queen Elsa leaves her kingdom in eternal winter after she uses her magical abilities, her sister Anna is set to save the day. On her journey she is accompanied by a handsome peasant and a funny snowman.

Frozen is a musical animation which has ample number of tunes in it. However except for one or two the rest sound mundane and just jumps in and out of the movie without adding much value. The animation however is eye pleasing. Though most of the stuff looks white there are certain attractiveness given with vivid details.

Where the movie really let down the viewer is when it comes to the story and characters. It strongly starts as a movie surrounding peasants but quickly transform in to a castle where things starts to move slow and from a certain point it becomes very predictable. Same goes with the characters. Most of them turn out to be pretty plastic. The ones who are interesting in some way are not human.

Enough Said (2013) Rating 3.5/5

Love at any age is fascinating and heartwarming. But doing a movie as beautiful as this involving over the middle aged adults is tough. But this movie proves that for a movie to be close to heart all it need is a simple story with a beautiful script and actors that makes you forget that you’re watching a movie.

Eva and Albert are both divorced parents with teenage daughters. At one fine evening they find each other at a party. Later on they discover that they like each other a lot and hope of a relationship touches the horizon. But Eva starts to doubt her relationship with Albert after she coincidently discovers that one of her close client is connected to Albert. And this connection surprises her so much that Eva loses her balance in the relationship which turns things in to grey.

Enough Said is a perfect example of how people react to things what they hear from others. Sometimes opinions matters a lot and they matter too much we forget to see the true picture. In Eva’s case she starts to doubt her relationship with Albert even though he seems to be the perfect person she have being looking for. And sometimes doubts eats in to relationships so much that they can turn in to ugly mistakes soon. The most moving part of the movie for me is this truth. There is no one perfect for anyone but a lasting relationship is always about compromising and seeing beyond your own expectations.

And finally performances by Julia Louis Dreyfus and James Gandolfini is so warm that you feel everything they feel. And with the untimely death of Gandolfini it’s difficult to smile even at the hopeful end of Enough Said. Such great actor and we will forever miss his performances.

Before Midnight (2013) Rating 4/5

If you ask me a direct question to explain the plot of this movie I might become numb. Seriously comparing with most of the romantic movies out there this one has no story at all. But if that’s so how can this be so appealing can be your next question. For that I have a simple answer. For anyone who has fallen in love with the right person even though you may or may not be living with that person right now Before Midnight will be speaking even a bit of your story. And for some it maybe because this reminds them about the first 2 installments of this movie Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004) but in my case I vaguely remember both. So my review on this is purely based to what I have seeing in this and this only.

Before Midnight is the far continuation of the story of Jesse and Celine after they met 9 years back in Paris. Keeping that detail aside they are now happily married and having twin daughters and this time they are in Greece for a vacation. So the story begins. As I mentioned before this sums up the whole story but the real beauty and the story of this movie is in the script and that script is fantastic. And this must be having a million dialogues in it. As when there is some kind of a silence hit the screen you start to wonder where the hell all that talking went. True some of the time these lengthy conversations are boring and seem rather irrelevant but the good thing they won’t let you give up the movie. There is something that makes you hang on to it. Maybe because those dialogues are true to life and heart felt.

The main characters are beautifully portrayed by Ethan Hawk and Julie Delpy whiles the cinematography and the atmospheric mood of Greece takes you on a vacation. You get to walk along some of the scenic country side and medieval type architecture without a sweat. And in the middle of all that you feel love in the air. This is a movie that you can experience. Watch it.

Don Jon (2013) Rating 2.5/5

Guys, if your thinking about watching a romantic movie with your partner then this is a must avoid. Unless your partner is super cool and can take man jokes like a real woman. Yes, this is that kind of movie which can put you in a very uncomfortable situation at times. Many times actually. Keeping all of that aside this has a kind of a unique plot and a smooth flow. Though it is clearly predictable at one point still the joy ride is really joyful. There is ample amount of hot bodies and skin show in this but most of them are in flash speeds. Ehem! Coming back to the plot it is somewhat similar to Shame. But it’s the funnier and light weighted version. Overall, a movie that can apply to the average guy in a not so average way.

Stuck in Love (2012) Rating 3.5/5

This turned out to be one of the best romantic movies I have seeing in recent times. It runs beyond just being a coming of age romance plot and expands its boundaries to effectively portray adults and their relationships and how deep they can run. It’s not only about love. It’s about deep affections and the quality of forgiving the ones that you forever in love with. The plot simply runs around 3 main characters one who is an adult and the other two are teenagers but all from the same family. The story is beautifully crafted to portray what love means to each individual and how each of them looks and feels it in their own little space. The viewer can clearly see similarities beyond the barriers of age but feel the power of love and how it grows with age as well. By the time the peak hits it has passed many tear jerking moments and you will be filled with joy and pain by the time it ends. This is indeed a beautiful movie to see. And a beautiful cast as well.

Lootera (2013) Hindi, Rating 4/5

Vastly Indian cinema is known for vibrant display of fascination and romantic melancholy mixed with colors and tunes. And most of them just leave you with short memories and empty mind. But Lootera has vastly broken that code and stands out to be a bittersweet movie experience. And a vastly memorable one. This movie from start to end runs with a great deal of silence embedded. Which means it’s mostly filled with expressions and dramatic and artistic visuals. For this very reason it just sinks right in to your heart. The songs are subtle yet beautifully placed. The mood it creates with the settings taking place in the mid 50s and the details in the cinematography along with makeup and costumes etc is quite a beauty to witness. And finally keeping all the visuals away the story which flows smoothly like silk takes the number one spot in what’s good about Lootera. It’s genuine, twisting and most strikingly heartwarming. If you take the two halves of the movie they are completely different from each other and still equally effective. Definitely an Indian melodrama that does exactly what’s it meant to do. Feed your mind.

The Great Gatsby (2013) - 3.5/5

I’m not a reader of fiction. Therefore I don’t compare the movies with it adapted novel. While some say The Great Gatsby has not kept its expectations in par with the novel I would say it’s a marvelous piece of cinema that dazzle the viewer with it unimaginably beautiful glamour and visual beauty. The story though it may seems is takes a slow phase to grow and hit the climax the sheer amount of multi-colored 3D worthy CG and set developments along with the marvelous details in the costume department keeps viewers attention quite well. At times it’s as if these people and places are made out of heaven and that’s exactly what the director wants us to believe. And that imagination pours in the screen from minute to more noticeable elements alike. Speaking of the plot it is not a letdown either. And the brilliant portrayal of Gatsby by Caprio is the strength of the cast which obviously what he does remarkably with each and every challenging role he seems to sign up for. All in all The Great Gatsby is a visually stunning joy ride to the pain.

A Little Bit of Heaven (2011)

Love happens and so does terminal illness. This is not a formula never tested in cinema before. However, it still feels fresh and keeps you loving the plot nonetheless. This one particularly has the charm and sweetness of Kate Hudson that makes it easier to digest. But for some reason it doesn't really make you feel anything much in the romance department as it should be. There are few minutes of really good emotional drama and all but other than that I don't think I will remember it for love. This falls into the mundane heap of romantic movies that comes out of Hollywood year after year.

Beautiful Creatures (2013)

Seriously I have no idea where to categorize this one. It looks like some ‘Twilight’ type fantasy movie but when it comes to cinematography and animation some TV series is way better than this. Maybe I’m done believing in romantic movies that involved people or creatures with super powers. They don’t work anymore. And this is trying to do the same old formula once again and from my perspective it doesn’t worth the 2 hours spent from your life. I’m pretty certain that some girls are hating me right now for writing this!

Safe Haven (2013)

Mix of romance and thrill has being an age old concept in cinema. Some movies do it best while some sucks. This one does it ‘ok’ but not really to the point where you can remember it for long. What I liked about it is the setting. Nice country side, small town and friendly people, little humor here and there. But the thrill part is a bit exaggerated at one point and when you thought it’s going to have an awesome ending something drastically goes wrong. I don’t wanna say what it is and spoil your enthusiasm but I didn’t agree on the final few minutes which suppose to have a thumping twist to the story. But lover will love this movie.

Upside Down (2012)

In recent past I have seeing only two sci fi movies that themed on humanity and love that’s worth mentioning of. One is Love (2012) which has a deeper version of love than we commonly speak of and the other is this one which is simply a remarkable feat of love in a more Romeo Juliet genre. Produced with ample amount of breath taking CG and at times too perfect than reality, Up Side Down is very rich in emotional department which many sci fi movies fail. And the plot is nothing like ever seeing which is a big plus for the success of this movie. More than a sci fi it feels like some fantasy flick with fantasy people who are from a planet we have never seeing.
