There are some movies that make
lot of noise but once watched they are just empty vessels. And there are some
movies that silently glorify themselves. I see All is Lost to be one of those movies
that silently brings in a wonderful cinema experience to the viewers. And it is
just ‘tragically’ fantastic.
The plot is really very simple
and straight forward. There is a man (who we have no idea of his identity) who get
stranded in the middle of the ocean when his boat get damaged after collision
with a floating shipping container. Using his resources in the boat and knowledge
of sailing and common sense he struggles to survive in the wicked sea. Weather
he succeeds in his battle or not is for you to find out.
This is a tale of tremendous
courage that a man can show against challenges he faces one after the other and
most of the time overwhelming and larger than life. The director powerfully
uses the one and only actor (Robert Redford) to drive this movie scene after
scene in to next level almost in emptiness and nothing but rubble, sky and sea
water. The performance by Robert (though he mutters only few words that you can
even count the number) is great. It’s just a one man show in the whole meaning
of it and the viewer is kept staring at him throughout. But it never gets
boring or a drag. Made with right momentum and length All is Lost is a movie
here to stay. With very few movies made to glory with a taste of sea water this
is sure one of them.
