This Boys Life (1993)

This is the beautifully crafted cinema adaptation of life story of the writer Tobias Wolff. And immediately you starts to fall in for the performance by the very young Leonardo Decaprio who I’m sure was not that commended at the time. This movie is a clear sign of him becoming one of the most talented actors in Hollywood today.

 

The story is good. It doesn’t lag or doesn’t dwell too much on any event but smoothly flows. The dream of escaping of a young boy who is abused by his step father is the whole fundamental that lies underneath. And that dream is quite well reserved till the end and the viewer solemnly wishes for the boy’s happiness. There are moments of stupidity, humor and above all despair that holds the movie well together. It’s not only a strong emotional drive. It’s more than that.

 

මෙය සුන්දරව සිනමාවට නැගුනු ටොබායස් වුල්ෆ් නමැති ඇමෙරිකානු ගත් කතුවරයාගේ ජීවිත කතාවයි. මුලින්ම ඔබ ඉතා බාල වියේ පසුවන අද සිනමාවේ දක්ෂම නළුවෙක් බවට පත් වී ඇති ලියනර්ඩෝ ඩි කැප්රියෝ ගේ රංගනයට මන බඳිනු ඇත. මේ චිත්‍රපටිය ඔහු යම් දිනෙක විශිෂ්ට නළුවෙක් බවට පත් වීමේ පෙර නිමිති මොනවට කියා පායි.

 

මෙහි කතාව හොඳය. එය ඉදිරිපත් කෙරෙන විලාශය අනුව කිසි විටෙක අනවශ්‍යය පමාවක් නොදැනෙයි. තම කුඩප්පාගේ ක්‍රියා කලාපය නිසා සිත් තැවුලට පත් දරුවෙක් එයින් මිදී පලා යාමට සිහින මැවීම තුලය් මෙහි කතාව ගෙතෙන්නේ. එම සිහිනය ඉතා හොඳින් චිත්‍රපටිය තුල ස්ථාපිත වන අතර ප්‍රේක්ෂකයා එම දරුවාගේ යහපත් අනාගතයක් පිලිබඳ සිහින මැවීමට පටන් ගනී. මෙහි ඇති මෝඩකම්, හාස්‍යය සහ ඒ සියල්ලට වඩා දැනෙන දුක්මුසු හැඟීම් තුලින් කතාව හොඳින් ගොඩ නැගෙයි. මෙය හුදෙක්ම දුක්බර කතාවක් පමණක් නොවෙයි. එය ඉන් ඔබ්බට ගිය එකක්.

Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)

When the words fantasy and cinema are connected what comes to mind is a world filled with imaginary creatures and beautiful landscapes that can only exists in a magical land. This is true for most of the movies out there but not for this one entirely. The fantasy here works in a very subtle and different way. For the best of it is not really anything to do with fantasy but real life. This is a story that can happen anywhere at any place and that’s what makes it beautiful and easy to connect with.

 

Filled with dramatic details and powerful performance this movie comes to light bringing a touching story line. And the cinematography is simply one of the best this year. You will see a great performance by a child and taste and smells the life in the ‘Bathtub’ and imaginary colony in the south east corner of the planet. And you will get to live the lives of a set of people who are bound by culture and values. It’s a tough life out there but plenty to laugh and drink about. Even the death!

 

සිනමාව සහ මනංකල්පිතය යන වචන දෙක එක් වුනු විට අපට මතක් වන්නේ දැක පුරුදු නැති වෙනස් සත්වයින් සහ අතිශය පියකරු භුමිතලයි. නමුත් මේ චිත්‍රපටියේ මනංකල්පිතය යන්න වෙනස් එමෙන්ම සියුම් අරුතක් ඇති එකක්. මෙහි බොහෝ දේ සැබෑ ලොවට වඩාත් සම්බන්ධ අතර මෙම කතාව කොහේ හෝ තැනක සැබවින් සිදු විය ඇති එක සේ හැඟෙ. එම නිසාම එය සමග ඔබට වඩාත් හොඳින් සම්බන්ධ වීමට හැකියාවක් ඇත.

 

ඉතා නිර්මානාත්මක පසුතල සහ ප්‍රබල රංගනයන්ගෙන් පිරිපුන් මේ චිත්‍රපටියෙහි කතාව හදවතට දැනෙන එකක්. ගිනිකොන දිග ලෝකයේ දේශයක දුෂ්කර ජීවිතයක් ගතකරන ජලාශ්‍රිත මිනිසුන් කොට්ටාශයක් වටා එය ගෙතෙනවා. එහි වෙසෙන මව නැති කුඩා දැරිවියක් සහ ඇයගේ ලෙඩින් පසුවන පියා අතර ඇතිවන කතාවකි මෙහි මුලික තේමාව. මේ දැරියගේ රංගනය ඉතාම සුන්දර එකක්. ඒ අතරම ඔවුන්ගේ ජීවිතයට තර්ජනයක් වන කාලගුණික බලපෑම් සහ ඔවුන්ට ශිෂ්ට සමාජයෙන් එල්ලවන තර්ජනද බොහෝ වෙයි. ඒ කෙසේ වෙතත් තම විශ්වාස සහ සංස්කෘතිය රැක ගනිමින් සොබාදහම සමග දිවි ගෙවන මේ මිනිසුන්ගේ කතාව ඉතා අපුරුයි. ඔවුන් මලගමකදී පවා කෑ බි සිනහවෙන් ගත කරන්නට තරම් සැහැල්ලු ශක්තිමත්  මිනිසුන්.

Frankenweenie (2012)

This is a very creative and a unique plot coming from Tim Burten again. You know the eerie looking characters and the horrific plot in his movies are his style. And to add to that this time it’s coming in black and white which is an ideal choice for this movie. Frankenweenie has a perfect combination of humor and thrill that makes a good movie that can be enjoyed by fans of all ages.

 

ටීම් බර්ටන් ගෙන එන තවත් නිර්මානාත්මක සහ වෙනස් තේමාවක් රැගත් චිත්‍රපටියක් මෙය. ඔබ දන්නවා ඔහුගේ චිත්‍රපටි වල සිටින අද්භූත පෙනුමැති චරිත සහ භය උපදවන කතාවන් ඔහුගේ නිර්මාණ ශයිලිය බව. ඒවගේම ඒ ශය්ලිය තවත් තීව්ර කරමින් මෙවර මෙය ඉදිරිපත් වන්නේ කළු සුදු වර්ණයෙන්. ෆරැන්කන්විනී හාස්‍යය සහ ත්‍රාසය අතර හොඳින් සමබර වුනු වයස් භේදයකින් තොරව රස විඳිය හැකි චිත්‍රපටියක්.

 

තම මිය ගිය බලු සුරතලා වන ෆ්රැන්කිට නැවත වරක් පන දෙන වික්ටර් හට මුහුණ දීමට සිදුවන අනපේක්ෂිත ප්‍රශ්න ගොඩක් මෙහි කතාවට මුල් වෙයි.

Just like thousands of crime movies out there this one also evolves around murder. But murder is not the sole center of it and that’s what makes this plot unique. This movie speaks of disgusting human behavior that is solely selfish and narrow minded. But this behavior does not belong to a victim or a criminal. But to a set of people who have witnessed this horrible crime. If you wish to see a full story and a crime being solved then this movie will not deliver what you’re looking for. It’s a mere representation of psychological reality of modern people. And that’s all it offers.

 

අපරාධ ගැන කියවෙන දහසකුත් චිත්‍රපටි වගේම මේ කතාවට පදනම් වන්නේ මිනි මැරුමක්. නමුත් එය ලක්ශගත වන්නේ එම මිනීමැරුම ගැන නොවීම මේ චිත්‍රපටියේ විශේෂත්වයයි. මෙයින් කතා කෙරෙන්නේ පිළිකුල් සහගත මනුෂ්‍යය චර්යාවන් සහ ආත්මාර්ථකාමී සහ පටු අදහස් ඇති මිනිසුන් ගැනයි. ඒ මිනිසුන් නම් අපාරාධය ලක්වුවන් හෝ අපාරාධකරුවන් හෝ නොව එම බිහිසුණු අපරාධයේ සාක්ෂි කරුවෝය. ඔබ බලාපොරොත්තු වන්නේ අපරාධයක් සහ එහි සුල මුල පෙන්වන කතාවක් නම් මේ චිත්‍රපටිය ඔබ සඳහා නොවේ. එය හුදෙක් නුතන මිනිසාගේ මනසේ සත්‍යය ස්වරුපයෙහි පිළිබිඹුවක් මිස වෙනකක් නොවේමය.

Samsara (2011)

If you have being watching movies which are out of the ordinary and especially non verbal documentaries that shook the cinema Baraka should be a familiar name to you. And now from the makers of Baraka, Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson comes an amazing new movie called Samsara. And it is no doubt is the most impressive, haunting and mystical piece of cinema I have witnessed. Samsara has a biggest story that you can ever witness. It is the story about the most diverse planet that we know of called the earth and the life exists in it. Shot over a period of 5 years in 25 countries using 70mm film Samsara has no worthy contender up to date.  And it is a rarest of gems out of handful of movies shot in 70mm in the past 40 years as the makers call it.

If you ever thought that you have seeing the world and know what’s out there then maybe you might feel inferior once you see Samsara. It is that much powerful and larger than anything you have seeing before. This is not fantasy or a world created with CGI or boosted with cinematic 3d to blow your mind. It is the world that exists out there today and the world we are delightfully enjoying and changing by the minute. And it is bound with nature and beliefs that significantly roots down to tiniest atom in your body and there will be no one who cannot relate to Samsara even in a tiny way. I urge you not to settle for poor copies or watch this in a media that is not meant to watch movies in. Choose a moment that you feel peace with yourself and choose a medium that gives you the best viewing and sound experience. For 102 minutes you will be n heaven but right here at home in earth.

Everything about Kar Wai Wong movies no doubt is different. They are different in style, acting, cinematography and mood. And the difference doesn’t stop there. The way you feel also will be differing from the moment of watching it to after you are done with it. I believe that’s what good movies are about. The feelings and how it change before, within and after the show. A good movie has a power to change you or at least to change your perception of something.

 

And this is one of those movies. It is very deep and very slow. Feels like some utter nonsense sometimes and not going anywhere. But isn’t that how life like too?  You don’t get what you want all the time or you don’t know where you will end up. It’s just a matter of many events that ultimately points you in a direction. Days of Being Wild is such set of events surrounding few people and their lives.  How I judge them will not be the same as how you would. Because we do not share the same life.

 

කර් වය් වොන් ගේ චිත්‍රපටි සියලු අතින්ම බොහෝ වෙනස් ඒවා වෙයි. ඒවා ශය්ලිය, රංගනය, සිනමාකරණය සහ මනෝභාවය යන සියල්ලෙන්ම අනෙකුත් බොහෝ සිනමා කෘති වලින් වෙනස්. එපමණක් නොව ඒවා ප්‍රේක්ෂක මනසේ වෙනස් කම්ද ඇති කරයි. ඔබට චිත්‍රපටිය බැලීමට පෙර, බලන අතතුර සහ බැලු පසු යන ත්‍රිවිධ අවස්ථාවන්හි හැඟීම් වල වෙනසක් ඇති වෙයි. මාගේ අදහසට අනුව හොඳ සිනමාව යනු එයයි. එතුලින් ඔබේ හෝ ඔබ විසින් යම් කිසි දෙයක් වෙත දරනා ආකල්පය සහ සංජානනය වෙනස් කිරීම හොඳ සිනමා කරුවෙකුගේ දක්ෂ කමයි.

 

මේ එවැනි චිත්‍රපටියකි. එය ඉතාමත්ම ගැඹුරු සහ මන්දගාමී එකකි. සමහරක් විට එය කිසි වැඩකට නැති කිසි දිශාවක් නැති එකක් සේ හැඟෙයි. නමුත් සැබෑ ජීවිතය යනු එයම නොවේද? ඔබට ජීවිතයේ සියලු විටම කැමති දේවල් නොලැබෙන අතර කැමති තැනට යා හැකිද නොවේ. ජීවිතය යනු එක දිගට සිදු වන සිදු වීම ගොන්නක පසු ප්‍රතිපලයකි. මේ චිත්‍රපටියද එවැනි සිදුවීම ගොන්නක් සහ ඒවාට නතු වන මිනිසුන් කිහිපදෙනෙක් වටා ගෙතුණු සාරවත් කතාවක්. ඒ මිනිසුන්ව මා විනිශ්චය කරන්නේ කෙසේද එය ඔබේ අදහසට නොගැලපෙනවා විය හැකි. ඒ ඔබගේත් මගෙත් ජීවිත එකක් නොව දෙකක් නිසාය.
