81 years in the making there is nothing more you can expect from this true masterpiece. Today where lame scripts and cheap acting defines cinema, “M” is an astonishing cinematic achievement from 1931 from Germany. Reminds me over and over that the foundations of true art was laid ages back and all we have now is a deteriorating fake memory of it. M is evidence of brilliant minds that created true artistic cinema. And after all these years it has the energy to blow your brain cells out.

 

This production is from the era where talking cinema was introduced and very little could be achieved at that front. But the sounds of this movie is exceptionally well made no matter how technically unfeasible it could have being at the time. The version I saw is the final restored print made in year 2000 which is 117 minutes long. And not a single moment of it can be recalled as irrelevant or boring. Some of the scenes are remarkably well made using creative cinematography and acting. And no matter how small the role can be the actors just gives the fullest life to them while the main lead Peter Lorre delivers a heart stopping performance.

 

M cannot be described in few sentences. It is deep and controversial at the same time. The minds of a child killer and the minds of a set of criminals who tries to justify their intention of killing the child killer is are very difficult to explain psychological occurrences. Yet the movie cleverly and skillfully brings these very different emotions on to one table and bridges the gap using the policemen who sweat to discover the mind boggling mystery killer case.  And mixing all that is the formula for one of the best classic thrillers every made.

 

M යනු වචනයේ පරිසමාප්ත අර්ථයෙන්ම අද්විතීය සිනමා කෘතියකි. එහි විශේෂත්වය මෙතෙකය් කියා කීමට පෙර එය වසර 1931 දී මුල් වරට තිරගතවුනු එකක් බව කිව යුතුම වෙය්. මීට වසර 80 කටත් වඩා පැරණි මේ චිත්‍රපටිය අදටත් එක ලෙස වලංගු කතාවකින් පෝෂණය වන අතර එහි රසය කාලයත් සමග වැඩි වී ඇතිවාක් මිස අඩුවක්නම් නොවේ. එමෙන්ම එහි ඇති සිනමාකරණ අගය විටෙක ඔබ මවිත කිරීමට තරම් සමත්ය.

 

ජර්මනයේ නරගයක කුඩා ළමුන් පැහැරගෙන ගොස් මරා දමන පුද්ගලයෙකු වෙයි. මොහු කොටුකරගැනීමට පොලිසිය මාස ගණනාවක් තිස්සේ අතිශය වෙහෙසක් දරය්. නමුත් ඉන් පලක් නොවෙය්. මේ අතර පොලිසියේ දැඩි සෝදිසි නිසා අපහසුතාවයට පත්වන නගරයේ පාතාලය ඉන් මිදීමට ඇති එකම ක්‍රමය මිනීමරුවා තමන් විසින් කොටු කර ගැනීම බව සිතා එයට වැඩ පිළිවෙලක් සකස් කරයි. මිනීමරුවා හසු වන්නේ පොලිසියටද නැත්නම් පාතාලයටද යන්න මම නොකියමි. මක් නිසාද එය එතරම්ම ලෙහෙසි අවසානයක් නොවන බැවිනි.

 

චිත්‍රපටියක් වශයෙන් ගත් කල තිබිය යුතු සියලු ගුණාංග මෙහි ඇතුලත් වෙය්. සිත සලිත කරවන රඟපෑම්, උසස් නිෂ්පාදන අගයක් සහ මුල සිට අගටම එක දිගට නැරඹිය හැකි කුතුහලය දනවන කදිම පිටපතක් ඒවායින් කිහිපයක්. මේ සියල්ල එකට සිඳවා ගත කල චිත්‍රපටි උනාට හොඳම කසායක් M.

Rather than being just another movie about a step mother trying to have a difficult connection with her step son this movie actually goes beyond the mundane for a very good reason. That is the excellent performance by the Oscar worthy Natalie Portman. She delivers yet another powerful acting as a disturbed and a complicated young woman who lost her child at the infant stage. It is a very hard to portray character with many emotions and strong feelings to bear up. And Natalie does is so well that even I not being a woman feels the emotions so strong. In that case I’m sure if you’re a woman you will understand her better than me.

 

The plot has a good balance. There are few characters and one or two side story lines in it too. And all of them fuel the main plot with or without interfering directly to it. And the tale flows with good phase bringing the most emotional moments to life with a good pause in between. Apart from being all that it’s a movie that could be watched with a mild heart and to fathom about.

 

තම අත දරුවාගේ හදිසි මරණයෙන් තැවෙන තරුණ මවක්. ඇයගේ සැමියාගේ පළමු කසාදයේ අට වයසැති පිරිමි දරුවෙක්. මේ දරුවාත් තම පළමු බිරිඳත් තරුණ බිරිඳත් අතරට සිර වූ මැදි වියේ පියෙක්. මොවුන්ගේ ජීවිත අන්දරයය් The Other Woman. නතාලි පොර්ට්මන් ගේ ප්‍රබල රංගනයෙන් සහ වින්දනය කල හැකි කතාවකින් මේ චිත්‍රපටිය රසවත් වෙය්. එය හුදෙක් බොළඳ පෙම් කතාවක් හෝ ඛේදනීය පවුල් කතාවක්ම නොවේ. ජීවිතයේ අභාග්‍යයන්ගෙන් වැරෙන් බැට කෑ මිනිසුන් කිහිප දෙනෙක් තම සිත තුල සැනසිල්ල සොයා කරන වැයමය් මේ කතාව.

 

විටෙක ඉතා ප්‍රබල හැඟීම් ජනිත කරවන තවත් විටෙක පිහාටුවක් සේ සැහැල්ලු මේ චිත්‍රපටිය නතාලිගේ තවත් විශිෂ්ට රංගන දායකත්වය සමග සිතට දැනෙන එකක්. මා කාන්තාවක් නොවුවද ඇයගේ හද ගැස්ම මටද දැනේ. ඔබ කාන්තාවක්නම් ඒ ගැන කුමක් පවසම්ද ?

All western stories are not complete if there is no man hunt and gun slinging action. And a horse never dies a natural death but by the hands of its master! And that sums up Seraphim Falls as well. There is a man on the run and couple of men on the chase with many horses. All of them go through cold and hot terrains which are equally mind blowing landscapes but nothing wait for them except revenge, greed and death.

 

What’s different about this is that the main leads are prominent Hollywood figures and that being Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan it definitely increases the value. And technically the performances are very good. You feel the pain of a bullet in your arm and getting abandoned in the hot desert alike. The story flow well and there is no boredom. And there is a good critical moment of the plot reserved for the last moment where everything becomes clear. If you’re a fan of good old western flicks this will not disappoint you.

 

බටහිර ඇමෙරිකානු පස්චාත් යුධ සමයේ මිනිස් දඩයක්කාරයින් පිරිසක් එක් මිනිසෙක් පසු පස ලුහුබැඳ යනවා. ඔවුන් සුන්දර හිම කඳු සහ වනාන්තර පසුකරමින් කර්කශ කාන්තාරද ඉක්මවා යන අතර ඔවුනට ඒ සියලු තැන්හිදීම හමුවන්නේ පලිගැනීම, තන්හාව සහ මරණය පමනය්. මෙය බටහිර චිත්‍රපටි වල මින් පෙර නුදුටු කතාවක්නම් නොවේ. නමුත් Seraphim Falls ඒ පැරණි කතාවම හුදෙක් නැවුම් සහ සිත් ගන්න අයුරින් දිග හරිනවා.

 

මුලික වශයෙන් හොලිවුඩයේ නම ගිය තරු දේපලක් වන ලියම් නීසන් සහ පියර්ස් බ්‍රොස්නන් ගේ රංගන දායකත්වය ගැන කිව යුතුය්. ඔවු තම චරිත ඉතා ප්‍රබල ලෙස රංගනයෙන් ඔසවාතබන නිසාම ඔබේ අතට වෙඩි වැඩිම සහ ඔබට රුදුරු මරු කතාරේ අතරමන් වීම වැනි දේවල් හොඳින්ම දැනේවි. පැරණි ඇමෙරිකාවේ මිනිස් දඩයම් ගැන චිත්‍රපටි වලට ඔබ කැමතිනම් මේ චිත්‍රපටිය අනිවාර්යෙන්ම ඔබව කුල්මත් කරාවි.

How can you make a mysterious death of a person in the woods a center piece of a comedy movie? This is what exactly happens in The Trouble with Harry. It is complete character and script driven. And it’s wonderful. There is a dead man and there is few living who tries to find the truth about what really went wrong. While some wants to hide from it some wants to explore further. Yet everyone seems to be connected in a weird criminal plot. But when the plot roles on there is much revealed and some quite unexpected findings. It’s a very different but wonderfully knit plot.

 

I watched this in HD where it has being restored to a great deal of details and beauty with staggering vivid color. But the mere fact of the original cinematography is fantastic given the time of its production. Each scene is perfectly composed. And just as all classics the acting is natural and talent driven. A well made Hitchcock classic!!

 

වසර 1955ක් තරම් වූ ඈත කාලයකදී නිෂ්පාදනය වුනු ඇල්ෆ්‍රඩ් හිච්කොක් ගේ තවත් සුන්දර අපරාධ කතා තේමාවක් රැගත් චිත්‍රපටියක් The Trouble With Harry. එය අපරාධ කතාවක් මෙන්ම ඉතා හාස්‍ය මුසු එකක්ද වෙය්. ඒ නිසාම එහි හිච්කොක්ගේ අනෙක් සිනමා නිර්මාණ වල නැති විනෝදාත්මක බවක් ගැබ් වෙනවා. ගම්මානයක් අසල වන ලැහැබක මිය ගොස් සිටියදී හමුවන හැරී නමැති මිනිසෙක් සහ ඔහුගේ අභිරහස් මරණය ගම්මානයේ කිහිපදෙනෙකුට බලපාන අයුරු මෙහි මුලික තේමාවය්. කෙනෙකුට එය සතුටක් වන අතර තවකෙකුට එය බියක් ගෙන දෙන්න සේම තවෙකෙක් එය දකින්නේ දෙවියන්ගේ වැඩක් ලෙසින්. මරණය සැඟවීමේ උත්සාහයට මේ සියල්ලන්ගේම එක වීම කතාවේ ඇති නිර්මාණශීලි බව කියා පාය්.

 

නුතන කාලයේදී HD තාක්ෂණයෙන් ඉතා හොඳින් ප්‍රතිස්ථාපනය කල චිත්‍රපටියය් මා විසින් නැරඹුවේ. ඒ කෙසේ වෙතත් මුල් චිත්‍රපටියෙහි ඇති සුන්දරත්වය නම් ඉතා උසස් බව හැඟෙයි.  සිනමාකරණය අතින් එකල නිෂ්පාදනය වුනු බොහෝ චිත්‍රපටි මෙන් මෙයද නොදෙවෙනි තැනක් ගනී. එය මුල් රුප රාමුවේ සිට අග දක්වාම මැනවින් පිළිබිඹු වෙය්.

This is a clay animation and its funny but it’s very dark. Maybe it’s the depressingly darkest clay animation that you might every come across. Definitely this is not for kids and it is not for the usual animation movie lovers. If you expect to see Chicken Run you will be very disappointed. This easily could have being a great feature film considering the nature of its plot and the mix of characters in it.

 

But the director has chosen it to be an animation but rather an imperfect ugly clay animation. The sheer ugliness and the bitterness of the characters make the plot ever strong and the dull monotonous color scheme doesn’t really help to boost the mood either. But that’s what this whole movie is about. The difficult side of lives of two people who find true friendship in their hearts in a very awkward manner is the base of all of it. And there is little bit of laughter and joy but for a good amount its pain, anger and anxiety. Most of you may not digest it as we are not used to this type of cinema. We want animations to be colorful, funny and joyful. But this is the total opposite. Yet it is powerful movie making.

 

 

මෙය මැටි සජීවිකරණ හාස්‍යෝත්පාදක චිත්‍රපටියක්. නමුත් එය ඉතා අඳුරු තේමාවක් රැගත් එකක්. මෙවැනි අඳුරු තේමා රැගත් සජීවිකරණ චිත්‍රපටි අපට දකින්න නොලැබෙන තරම්. එම නිසාම බොහෝ දෙනෙකු මේ චිත්‍රපටිය හෙලා දකින්නට හෝ එයට කිසි සෙත් රිසි නොවන්නට පුළුවන්. ඔබ බලාපොරොත්තු වන්නේ සුන්දර චරිත ගොඩක් සහ වින්දනීය චිත්‍රපටියක් නම් මෙය ඔබට සුදුසු නොවේ. එසේ වන්නේ මෙහි එන කතා තේමාව සාමාන්‍යය  කලාත්මක චිත්‍රපටියකට ගැනීමට තරම් සුදුසු එකක් විමය්.

 

නමු අද්‍යක්ෂ වරයා මේ කතාව කීමට මැටි වලින් කල අවලක්ෂණ චරිත කිහිපයක් උපයෝගී කර ගන්නවා. එසේ කිරීමෙන් කතාවේ ඇති තීව්‍රතාවය නිතැතින්ම වර්ධනය වන බව පෙනේ. ලොවෙහි දෙකොනක ජීවත් වන දෙදෙනෙකගේ ජීවිත වල ඛේදනීය බව සහ දුක් මුසු බව ඔවුන් ලියුම් මගින් හුවමාරු කර ගැනීම සහ ඔවුන් බොහෝ කලට හොඳම මිතුරන් ලෙස වචනයකුදු නොදොඩා හෝ කිසිදා හමු නොවී ගත කරන අයුරූ මෙහි මුලික කතාවය්. විශිෂ්ඨ පිටපතක් සහ අඳුරු වර්ණ තේමාවක් රැගත් මේ චිත්‍රපටිය ඇත්තෙන්ම වෙනස් නමුත් නිර්මානශිල්ත්වයෙන් පිරිපුන් එකක්.

This is another French action thriller that has the immense capacity to keep you at the edge of your seat. Scooped around corrupted cops, undercover agents and ruthless drug dealers it is a plot that is twisted and turned. And the whole story run a period of a day starts from one morning and ends from the next.

The plot is a series of creatively aligned circumstances that leads from one to the next juiced with more pumping adrenaline.

 

The main lead portrays a certain die hard character so tensely motivated by his kidnapped son and from the intention of getting him back at any cost. And the rest of the characters tag along making that job ever hard for the main lead. The close camera frames and thumping heavy dance music boosts the mood moment to moment without making the viewer bored of the plot circulating within the same location. And at last everyone goes home happy except for the dead people! And there are many dead people!!

 

ප්‍රන්සයෙන් එලි දකින ක්‍රියාදාම චිත්‍රපටි අපේ ලෝකයේ මේ පැත්තේ දකින්න ලැබෙන්නේ අඩුවෙන්. ඒ නිසාම ඒ චිත්‍රපටි වල තියෙන අගය බොහෝ දෙනෙකුට මග හැරෙනවා. මේ එවැනි නොනවතින ජවයකින් පිරි ප්‍රංශ ක්‍රියාදාම ත්‍රාසජනක චිත්‍රපටියක්. එය ගෙතෙන්නෙ පාතාලය සමග සම්බන්ධ දුෂිත පොලිස් නිලධාරියෙක් තම රහස් හෙළි වීමත් සමග අතුරුදහන් වන තම පුත්‍රයා බේරා ගැනීමට කරන වැයම මුල් කරගෙනය්. තම පුත්‍රයා සොයා ගැනීමට ඔහු වැර දරන අතර පුත්‍රයාව සඟවා තබා ගැනීමට පාතාලයට දැඩි වැයමක්ද දැරීමට සිදු වෙනවා. කතාව හරියටම දවසක කාලක් පුරා දිවෙන අතර එක දිනක උදැසනින් ආරම්භ වී පසු දින උදැසනින් අවසන් වෙනවා.

 

කතාවේ ගලා යන ස්වරුපය ඉතා යහපත්. එය මොහොතින් මොහොත වෙනස් වෙමින් කතා නායකයාට අලුත් අභියෝග ඉදිරිපත් කරමින් ඉදිරියට ඇදෙනවා. ඒ නිසාම ප්‍රේක්ෂකයාට කාලය ගත වීම දැනෙන්නේ නැහැ.
